A North Central Airlines twin engine plane missed a fogged runway at O'Hare International Airport and crashed into a hangar, bursting into flames. Twenty seven people died and 27 bodies were counted in the wreckage. The flight originated in Minneapolis and an off duty pilot may have been aboard. Also in hospital were eight drum corps members from Des Plaines.
In Saigon the Viet Cong broadcast a new offer to meet U S representatives on New Year s Day to negotiate the release of three American POWs Spec 4 James W Brigham of Ocala Florida Spec 4 Thomas N Jones of Lynnville Indiana and Pfc Donald C Smith of Akron Pennsylvania The move follows an allied claim there will be no New Year cease fire and a previous Christmas Day meeting that collapsed over Viet Cong demands and propaganda concerns.
