Clerk J. B. Beverley of the Corporation Court issued a marriage license yesterday to Leo C. Alderton and Miss Pearl V. Powell, both of Martinsburg Virginia. Alderton lists residence as Winchester and age 22, Powell age 20.
H Eugene Ritter, a justice of the peace, was moved from the county jail to the Virginia Penitentiary after a judge sentenced him to one year for shooting his wife Blanche Ritter. He will serve about eight months after time already served and a good behavior commutation. Guard S T Smith escorted Ritter to an outbound train with little time between connections.
Notice from the Board of Supervisors states the pole on the North Frederick Turnpike will be down at dark on and after January 8. The order is issued by the board.
Farmers & Merchants National Bank of Winchester declares a regular 3 percent semi annual dividend and a 1 percent extra dividend. Dividend checks mailed Saturday December 30 1917. Cashier T H D Fuller announces. Shooting match planned Monday near Kernstown with prizes of turkeys and chickens.
Magistrate Fultz in the police court sentenced four youths to resign from the city fire department for periods up to five years after turning in a false alarm. Ralph Brown Otis Stewart Carl Schmidt and Frank Fansler faced fines totaling 36 dollars plus costs. Brown and Stewart were fined 11.50 each Schmidt and Fansler 6.60 each.
A blaze destroyed the King street barns of the Toronto street railway causing about 1 million dollars in damage and the loss of 300 cars. The incident occurred on December 30 and was reported from Toronto, Canada.
The county clerk yesterday issued a marriage license to Thomas Edgar Archer and Miss May belle Horne. Rev. W. C. Talbert of Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South officiated. Archer is a South Carolina native and traveling salesman. Horne, a Washington D C native living in Middletown, is the daughter of Robert H B Horne of Middletown.
TOKIO Japan Dec 30 Three hundred persons perished in the wreck of the Japanese steamer Sanko Maru off the Chinese coast near Chefoo. The vessel went aground and was attacked by Chinese pirates. Some aboard were drowned while others were killed by the pirates according to survivors. Earlier reports said the ship carried 400 people including two Americans.
The notice promotes a Christmas Savings Club offered by Farmers & Merchants National Bank locations in Winchester Virginia. It invites customers to open an account tonight and states operating hours from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The wording emphasizes being the original and best and targets evening visitors.
Weather permitting a bus line between Winchester Virginia and Romney West Virginia will open about March 1 1917. Two large cars daily will operate with the best possible service at low rates. Closed cars will be used in cold weather months. Hudson Overland Cars, 29-1p421.

Relatives in Winchester report the death of Miss Julia Howard Thompson formerly of Winchester. She died in Baltimore several days ago at age 63 after planning to return for Christmas with relatives Caroline Packawood and Nancy Coble in Winchester where she had lived for fifteen years. Born in Chillicothe Ohio she was 63. Continued on page 5.
In Youngstown Ohio on December 30 Edward C Enoch age 19 shot and killed Earl F Mitchell age 24 after spotting his wife with an old admirer at an ice cream parlor He then summoned the undertakers and surrendered to police.
Mr. David E. Ritenour, a Shenandoah County born Civil War Confederate veteran, died in Winchester Indiana after a long illness. He served in a Shenandoah company and was wounded in the Valley campaign. He was a contractor and farmer, twice married, survived by his widow, three children led by son Robert, three brothers including A T Ritenour of Winchester, two sisters, and other relatives.
Postoffice in Winchester observes New Year’s Day as a holiday with limited hours. General delivery and stamp windows open 11 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 2 p.m. City carriers start at 8 a.m. rural carriers make no deliveries. No money order business or night mail collection. Banks and Handley Library closed.
Special orchestral music and Christmas songs will highlight the Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday school tomorrow afternoon. The program starts at 2 15 p m and all are invited to attend.
A 19 year old Winchester youth named Palmer escapes custody for the third time in a month. He had been in Occoquan District workhouse after a prior breakout from Winchester jail. He is described as a lifelong thief with a criminal record and a prior parole violation.
Thomas Magruder Turner aged 43 of Frederick Maryland and Winchester Virginia, a nephew of L C Janney, died of pneumonia and meningitis at his Washington home where he worked in the Pennsylvania Railroad freight office. He is survived by his widow Eva J Turner and two sisters. Funeral held at his residence and burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs L C Janney attended from home.
Baltimore wholesale markets closed with spot wheat at 184 7-S and corn priced at 1.04 dollars.
Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Howarth of Providence and Mrs. Laura A. Burgess of New York City have been touring Virginia and Hot Springs. They reached Winchester last evening and checked into Hotel Evans, driving a handsome new Oldsmobile limousine.

The State Corporation Commission will assist efforts to designate the Northwestern Turnpike as a federal aid road. Prominent Chicago club women plan a nationwide campaign to broadcast information on birth control to educate the public. The effort follows secret dissemination in Chicago and cites medical authorities, with the campaign guided by attorney advice.
Charlestown West Virginia December 30 A highway robber attacked Mrs Charles Sifford on her way home and was forced to flee after she tore the mask from his face. The suspect Dayton Gorrell an ex convict has been linked to earlier robberies of women and has been out of jail for about a month. He reportedly said he wanted to return to the penitentiary.
Madrid reported that Spain notified the United States it cannot support President Wilson in his peace negotiations, according to a Central News dispatch from Madrid.
The notice lists closing market prices for poultry and small stock. Chickens and hens bring four pounds and over at twenty cents, old roosters eleven cents, turkeys eight pounds and over at twenty eight cents, small poor stock twenty two cents, old toms twenty six cents. Hay includes timothy at seventeen fifty and light alfalfa at sixteen fifty. Calves range from sixteen to twenty two dollars per head, pigs from one seventy five to two dollars and fifty cents per head, with varying conditions and weights noted.
Big bears are unusually plentiful in the mountains along the West Virginia border. War densville Hardy county reports dynamite and sledge hammers used to extract a 420 pound bear from a cave after it was shot. Hunters are alert as large tracks are seen in the area.
Two agents of the Prohibition Commissioner J Sidney Peters seized 18 quarts of whisky at the Southern Express Company's office in Harrisonburg. They forbade delivery of the wet goods because the outside cover printed the name and price, violating the Mapp law.
In Paso Texas reports say Monterey, capital of Nuevo Leon, will soon be captured by Villa. Saltilo is reported taken by Villistas, with General La Garza recalled to defend the state. Carranza orders large Japanese ammunition shipments and over $2,000,000 in gold sent to Japan for payment.
Telegram reports the death of David W. Timberlake at Clarksburg West Virginia this morning. He was 82 born in White Hat Berkeley County moved to Martinsburg later farmed in Jefferson County and lived with his son in Clarksburg for five years. He served in Company B Second Virginia Regiment during the war and was wounded three times. Survived by two sons E B Timberlake Summit Point and DFA Timberlake Clarksburg. Funeral will be after the 12 09 o clock Baltimore and Ohio train Monday, burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Reports from London and Berlin describe a major Meuse offensive with fighting on both sides of the river and attempts to seize hill positions. A British cruiser saved the city Chicago from a German submarine after a near-miss off Fastnet on December 14.
