New York December 29 Fifty firefighters narrowly escaped death as a $500000 blaze destroyed the Butler Brothers department store on lower Broadway. Eight floors collapsed into the cellar as steel pillars gave way just as hose crews entered. A blast blew manhole covers and shattered windows while 125 firefighters outside were forced back by the flames.
In Los Angeles a 19 year old killer William Edward Hickman confessed to two murders adding to the Marian Parker case He implicated Welby Hunt in the Ivy Thoms killing and Hunt's grandfather A R Driskell is linked to a death by supposed suicide as police probe forgery and bank payroll connections a jail kindness led Hickman to confess further and await arraignment.

W J Holloway would preside as the session of the self styled Senate impeachment court considers the legality of proceeding. Thirty six senators attended the hotel meeting after guardsmen dispersed yesterday.

Shirley died and said police were seeking him Deputy Joseph Davis plus Sheriff R S Moler aid the inquiry Harrison is jailed in Charles Town without bond after witnesses testified he struck Shirley and dragged the body to the Antietam area near the Norfolk and Western bridge in Washington County
Malcolm Williams and Lawrence Tinsman, both youths from Washington, were held in jail for a Juvenile Court hearing after the theft of a car owned by Wilmer Shade. The vehicle was found in Washington days earlier. Williams is said to be a delivery boy and ex telegraph messenger. Intercessions by family and friends sought parole to relatives.
Heavy buying of railroad equipment shares based on reports of large locomotive and freight car orders pushed the market higher after a mixed start. United States Steel and General Motors led the upswing as call money held at 5 percent, with early declines easing in the afternoon.

Despair is the blighted fruit of hope.
In Corporation Court Judge Philip Williams renews liquor licenses for People's Drug Co Inc and Irwin Drug Co Inc to sell ardent spirits on prescriptions or for scientific and medicinal purposes. Licenses expire December 31, 1928, with $2000 bonds posted as required.
Miss Wagner of Weyers Cave Virginia visiting relatives near Double Tollgate was badly cut and bruised when a Ford coupe carrying her and Mrs. Joseph Perry left the Front Royal pike and tumbled down an embankment by Opequon creek. Mrs. Perry had minor injuries. Dr. Dearmont treated Wagner. Condition improved later.
E W Cather won a $4,000 verdict in Corporation Court after a swift trial over an apple business contract from 1926. The case pitted Cather against John H Campbell with attorney T Russell Cather for the plaintiff and Harry R Kern Harrison and Harrison for the defense. The jury of seven included foreman W B Wagner and members C R Keeler S C Hoshour B B Sheetz B H Carpenter Howard Shockey H R Shay.
Richmond Va December 29 Rickers M Bibb aged carpenter beat his wife to death with a clock on November 25 in Hastings Court today a commission of alienists declared Bibb insane and unable to stand trial Alfred Kirsh Bibbs attorney said he would not oppose sending his client to a state institution for the insane as soon as possible
Martinsburg, W V December 29 authorities seek James B Ervin a crafty confidence man who swindled travelers checks and fled from Virginia to Martinsburg after opening accounts and deserting his wife. He later testified in the Doyle Masters trial for the Elmer Hicks killing on the Martinsburg Winchester pike.
Chas T Country Carey received the death penalty for a prison murder during an attempted break on July 5 that killed guard Alfred F Walker. Companion Benjamin F Spragins Jr is also sentenced to death for the same incident and a prior August hold up that claimed William B Norris. Governor Ritchie may sign Spragins's warrant. both executions expected on the same day.
Grayson Cline a 25 year old tenant farmer near Millpoint Washington county was badly burned when a fire destroyed the brick farm house. He suffered serious burns while rescuing his wife and two children from their beds on the second floor after the stove was lit. The building and most contents were destroyed.
The Handley Library will close all day next Monday January 2 observed as New Year’s day. It notes the closure is one of the two holidays observed by the library.
