Apples Surplus Purchase Extended After Promising Results
The Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation reports about 4.5 million bushels of surplus apples bought since October 3, averaging 70 cents a bushel. Purchases have reached 500,000 bushels weekly, distributing to over 4 million needy people, with a plan to continue and adjust varieties and packaging for export, under guidance from growers and extension service officials.

British Steamer Stanholme Sunk by Submarine
The British steamer Stanholme, 2473 tons, was torpedoed and sunk off the west coast of England with 14 lives lost. Ten survivors report no warning Christmas Day as the ship sank two hours after leaving port. The captain survived uninjured. the chief engineer’s wife, Mrs Mabel Jenny, perished. Seaman E L Evans said there was no lifeboat time, a raft was used, and survivors were rescued by a Norwegian lifeboat.

French Report Repulsing Raids Christmas Day
