Soviet troops press south through the middle Don Steppe with swift 12 to 18 mile daily advances toward Rostov on the Don. Millerovo and surrounding Cossack towns fall as Germans suffer heavy losses, including 16 400 captured yesterday and 1 000 from a division today.

Lieut. Harry Dutch Ebert navigator of the Flying Fortress reports in a letter home how his bomber fought a 25 minute duel with German fighters deep in North Africa. The tail gunner was wounded three times. the crew escaped by desert overnight and were rescued by a British patrol. Ebert, 25, had earlier served in Palestine and received the Silver Star for a raid on the Italian fleet. He is a Randolph Macon College and University of Virginia alumnus with three sisters living in Virginia.
Allied reports say U S dive bombers struck the Munda airfield on New Georgia and strafed the New Guinea Buna area as Japanese fortifications were breached by Allied offensives. Daily raids from Henderson Field Guadalcanal continue with heavy bombing and oil drum targets also attacked in Cape Gloucester and Jacquinot Bay vicinity.

The National War Labor Board and Treasury salary unit approve a four percent raise retroactive to May 31 1942 for all salaried employees earning 3000 a year or less at American Viscose plants in Marcus Hook Lewistown Meadville Parkersburg Nitro Roanoke Pronto Royal and Wilmington head office. A three cent per hour wage rise retroactive to May 31 1942 for hourly staff at the same plants was also announced.
Oscar Nebel Hosiery Company employees held their fifth annual Christmas party at York's Inn on Martinsburg pike. Andrew Bell presided as toastmaster and C P McVicar spoke. Richard Veitel received a gift and plant man got two gifts. The firm employs 86 workers and produces about 1 000 dozen pairs weekly, similar to last year, with full war stamp and bond participation. The event ended with a dance.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents will interview female applicants at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester for immediate employment in Washington. Beginning salary is 1440 per year with advancement. Applicants must be citizens in good physical condition, high school educated, ages 18 to 40, and urged to appear between 9 AM and 6 PM with a 3x5 inch photo.
The Fellowship Club completed Christmas aid, delivering baskets of toys food and clothing to 239 families 182 in Winchester and 57 in Frederick County. About 835 individuals received direct aid and many more received supplementary materials. The club thanks contributing organizations businesses and individuals for their generous help in ensuring a brighter Christmas for those in need.
R A F fighters pressed large air operations to support British advances in Burma. They struck Rathedaung on the Mayu river and also attacked Yenangyaung oil installations while other formations targeted enemy airfields and mines. No RAF losses reported. Rathedaung sits about 25 miles northwest of Akyab and near Alethangyaw where British troops advanced along the Bay of Bengal. No update on land progress.
Pvt Bernard Groves of Ft. Knox Ky and Miss Lois Shorter plan a Christmas Eve ceremony at Braddock Street Methodist Church in Winchester. The groom’s brother Midshipman Thomas E B Groves will be best man while Miss Pegs Ritter serves as maid of honor.
