A Star Staff Writer visits a downtown Winchester shop where Santa meets children from infants to 84 years old. He recalls chatting with about 7,000 visitors, handing out candy, and promising treats on Christmas Eve. Shy youngsters, dolls, and cousins feature in the holiday scene as families line up for photo moments.
Kennedy and Macmillan push toward a communique after two days of talks. They reviewed Congo Berlin and nuclear testing and plan further discussions on Southeast Asia policy and a possible resumption of nuclear tests. Kennedy to Palm Beach this afternoon. Macmillan to depart tonight.
Adlai Stevenson said the United Nations will survive despite life and death tests this year. He noted Congo progress and the interim secretary general situation, warned against Goa tensions, and said new nations have invigorated international debate.

A powerful cold front swept the northern Rockies bringing snow sleet and rain and winds up to 97 mph. Northern Montana faced the hardest hit with snowslides closing two major Wyoming highways and wind gusts smashing signs in Colorado. ALE lightning disrupted Helena telephone service and a 9920 foot Loveland Pass saw closures as plows battled large drifts.
The government reports a 0.1 percent drop in the living cost index in November to 128.3 percent of the 1947-49 base, while spendable earnings and buying power of the average factory worker hit a record high. Toy and sporting goods costs fell 0.2 percent from a year earlier. weekly after tax earnings for a four person family rose to 85.03 dollars, up about 7 percent year over year.
A large plastic balloon, about 200 feet long and 75 feet wide, fell near Winchester. Thomas Winfred Brill 16 of Winchester charged with involuntary manslaughter in the highway death of Franklyn Dickinson Good 25. State Police say Brill drove a 1957 MG roadster that overturned on Route 50 about .4 miles west of Winchester at 1 10 a m. One of two passengers died. Bond set at $1000. Brill posted bond.
Montgomery Ward at 27 South Loudoun Street will close Saturday at 6 PM after a brief sale. The notice lists the local department store’s closing time and date for customers and staff.
