Virginia agricultural officials report a 1948 total production value of 303.347 million dollars with record yields for corn peanuts barley and hay. Per acre records also set for oats flouring barley tobacco cotton soybeans buckwheat and potatoes while costs rose and net income likely declined from 1947.
D. K. Russell of Clearbrook and Fred L. Glaize of Winchester won in the fruit pack contest sponsored by the Federal and State fruit inspection service VPI and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Announcement was made at the Virginia Horticultural Society annual meeting.
Local history notes describe Virginia under military rule 1865 to 1870 and U S Congress decisions creating Military District No 1 in 1867. It lists G O numbers 65 68 and 77 detailing elections for a new state constitution and delegates meeting in Richmond December 1867. Then paid advertisements follow for gifts and sales.
Clarke T. Cooper owner of General Oil Co. Winchester was elected president of the Exchange club for the coming year. Others named to offices are Dr Leon Slavin vice president Carl Haines secretary and Douglas Cather treasurer. Board members include Claude Smalls Jr Dr Courtney Grim and Richard E. Dole Jr. plus carry over Emmons Irvine Cather and Ralph Hardy.
Colored electric candles appear in windows though outdoor decorating remains sparse. Northern Virginia Power reports few sales of decorating materials, while Legion post front, Sarah Zane and Friendship fire halls show decor. Last year marked a return to private residence decorations after the war. A prewar JBT contest for best decorated homes was held.
A Shanghai-Hong Kong CNAC C-54 Sky master crashed off Hong Kong in fog. The aircraft lost contact after departing Shanghai this morning and reportedly went down near Balfoar Island with 31 aboard feared dead.
The United States Britain and France announced a Three Power government for Berlin. They said the Western Allies will exercise the Allied Command and control for now in the Western sectors while Russians remain out of the Four-Power structure.
Rural churches announce Christmas programs with multiple events led by local pastors and members. Reliance EUB presents a Christmas pageant at 7 45 p m Friday directed by Mrs Genevive Stickley with a children’s devo led by Mrs Ruth Steele and Mrs Louise White. Greenway EUB offers a general service of songs and recitations at 7 45 p m Monday. Fairview EUB hosts its Christmas program at 7 45 p m Monday. Hayfield Assembly holds a Christmas program at 7 30 p m tomorrow. Galilee Christian church presents its Christmas pageant at 7 30 p m Thursday. Capon Bridge Christian church also schedules a Christmas program at 7 30 p m Thursday.
George Helsley of Grimes was found guilty by Trial Justice W Erle Edwards of failing to send his child to school. He received a $5 fine and a 30 day jail sentence, with 25 days suspended on condition of no further attendance law violations for 12 months. Helsley has 10 days to appeal or begin serving the five day term.
Senator Taft of Ohio appears certain to resume his role as GOP policy chief in the new Senate despite threats of revolt. He is expected to chair the policy committee again, shaping opposition to President Truman on price controls and labor legislation. Insurgent blocs may win some seats but likely not topple Taft's leadership.
Christmas vacation for about 2000 city school students began this afternoon with parties and programs in all schools. Classes resume on Monday January 3, 1949. Tomorrow marks the last school day of 1948 for Frederick and Clarke county students who will also return January 3.
A five inch Virginia snow and nearly twenty inch New York snowfall vanished under warmer sun and rising temperatures. Streets dried while buses and trucks reported on time service and airports in the New York region resumed operations. Forecasters expect fair mild weather tonight and pleasant conditions for Christmas Eve shoppers.
The State Department denounces force to effect political change in Latin America as deplorable and dangerous. It says the United States will consult with Latin American nations to stabilize politics and encourage democratic, constitutional procedures amid recent revolts and uprisings.

Police say he either jumped or fell. medical examiner undecided pending inquiry. Sayre, former assistant secretary of state and Sayre’s secretary Anna Belle Newcomb accompanied him as Sayre testified before a federal grand jury investigating un American activities.
Attorney General Clark seeks federal jurisdiction over tidelands off Texas and Louisiana coasts, asking the Supreme Court to apply the federal paramount rights recognized in the California tidelands decision. The suits target lands under Gulf waters seaward of low water mark, excluding bays and inland waters.
Cancellations at the Winchester post office surged to a record 92 260 yesterday led by Carl Campbell postmaster. The prior peak was 81 000 on Dec 18 1946 with 10 day total 443 000 versus 367 000 a year earlier. Post office staff worked Sunday to clear holiday mail before Christmas.
Virginia Transit Co and Portsmouth Transit Co face a deadlock with the AFL locals in Richmond Norfolk and Portsmouth. Union leaders plan a strike vote referendum December 27, with arbitration urged under state law. If arbitration is rejected the strike could start five weeks after notice to the governor.
Quentin Roosevelt the 29 year old grandson of Theodore Roosevelt was reported aboard a Chinese airliner that crashed near Hong Kong killing all 33 aboard. Lunghwa field sources confirmed Roosevelt boarded the ill fated plane.
Judge Henry Schweinhaut refused to dismiss the indictment against Rep. J Parnell Thomas of New Jersey. The ruling upheld the conspiracy charge to defraud the government, denying Thomas’s motion based on the grand jury's composition. The decision cites a Supreme Court opinion handed down the day before.
Six new members join the Chamber of Commerce roster. They include Joseph B. Newlin attorney Tom Halterman signs Carl Lewis of Redwing restaurant Sebert Smith of Winchester Casket Co E. E. Bowers of O and railroad and the Jack hotel. Names listed in the monthly bulletin issued in a holiday booklet by Secretary Gene Sakers.
Chicago report on Mrs Angeline Kemp seeking an annulment from husband Joseph Kemp after ten days of marriage alleging lack of affection. Judge Julius H Miner took the case under advisement. Kemp is a 75-year-old retired contractor with a large blended family.
Indonesian broadcasts urged scorched earth tactics as Dutch landings expanded in Java and Sumatra. Dutch troops seized major towns including Jogjakarta, Toeban, Bojolal, and Patilom while capturing border areas and holding Republican leaders in custody. Guerrilla warfare predicted as the clash widens across the islands.
