Winchester man Paul F. Shryock identified with the Trans Atlantic boats for six or seven years. The ship he was on was reported sinking after a collision with another vessel in the North Sea.
Paul F. Shryock of Winchester son of Pred A. Shryock, long a crew member and dining-salon supervisor on the Baltimore Mail Line steamer City of Hamburg, is named among relatives. The City of Hamburg, after colliding with the Italian ship Confidenza in fog off Terschelling, was later said to return to port unassisted with two holds taking on water but no injuries reported. a separate note says the liner had not yet sunk and remained on course to Cuxhaven.

Walter H. Edmondson died at noon yesterday at his Middletown home after an extended illness. Final rites will be at 4 PM tomorrow from his home, conducted by Rev. Brown of the Middletown Missionary Church. He will be buried in Middletown Cemetery. He was born March 2, 1864, son of the late Strother and Harriet Cooper Edmondson, and lived his life in the Middletown area. He was a longtime coal worker and served as Frederick county deputy treasurer under Robert Smith. Survived by wife Maude C. Edmondson, two sons in Winchester and Warren Ohio, two sisters Cyrus Lineburg and Rachel Rischel, and two brothers Howard and Samuel. another brother Russell Edmondson was electrocuted at a nearby plant months ago.

William Fox of Front Royal died in Memorial Hospital becoming the third person to die in motor accidents in the county since last Friday. He was 62, survived by seven children and five brothers, with funeral set for Thursday at Front Royal Baptist Church. State Officer Turner Slaughter said manslaughter charges are filed against Willie Terry, driver in the dual crash. James Eubank of Front Royal is nursing neck injuries from the same incident. his injuries are not serious.
In Waverly, Iowa, at the Bremer County Home near town, 38 year old Bertha Watters killed two of her children and wounded two others with a shotgun after a 5 30 a m incident. Sheriff Frank Sager said she confessed saying the children wouldn’t mind her. The family lived in a cabin with husband Elias Watters and four children.
The International Apple Association reports December 1 storage holdings at a record high, especially in the northwest, with Washington Oregon and Idaho driving a 4.87 million bushel rise over two years. Virginia holds 75 percent of barreled apples with improving eastern market prospects.

Prime Minister Chamberlain told the Commons that no peaceful settlement has been attempted by Japan in the China war. He urged Japan to prove its goodwill and warned Britain will act to protect interests while pursuing peace. Labour leader Attlee accused Japan of using force to strike Russian shipping prior to Manchukuo. Hongkong and Shanghai risks were cited as likely consequences of Japan's actions.
From Hendaye on the Franco Spanish frontier comes word that Spain has thrown 20 000 more men into the attack on Teruel joining an army of 50 000 to take the provincial capital at all costs. The battle rages in hand to hand combat as casualties mount and Teruel radio and communications are cut.
The Democratic National Committee plans a January 8 Jackson Day dinner in all 48 states with a uniform $25 plate price to cover a $125,000 deficit. In Washington a $100 plate includes a personal speech by President Roosevelt and a loaned Corcoran Gallery Jackson painting to be insured for $25,000 and hung high to avoid grapefruit shots.
Shanghai dispatch reports Japanese movements fueling fears for Hangchow Canton and Tsingtao as Britain and the United States rush to evacuate nationals. An American British relief party was turned back toward Hankow while the Pope and Marblehead head for Tsingtao to aid 300 Americans.

In Shanghai on December 21 Maj. Gen. Kumakichi Harada said further study shows the Panay gunboat did not fire on Japanese troops. He maintained no shells exploded near the scene and Japanese boats did not machine gun the Panay. Civilians reportedly gave oranges candy and cigarettes to Japanese soldiers. Harada postponed action on shelling of the Ladybird while Tokyo reviews.
