Southern States Cooperative said its Firestone Co. Poultry Dressing Plant at Troutville will close after Jan. 31, leaving about 200 workers unemployed. The co op cites four years of losses and a regional drop in broiler production as the main cause, while pledging to fulfill current orders and help growers find alternate markets.
The League of Virginia Counties rejects a titling tax on new and used cars proposed by the Highway Study Commission. C F Hicks says the tax was not raised in hearings and may be a last minute idea by consultants to fund projects. Hicks notes the levy plus local sales taxes could erode the statewide sales tax base. The league supports a general statewide tax with local returns and cites the titling tax as generating over 14 million dollars annually for road work.
