Fire Safety Tips For Christmas

Winchester and Frederick fire crews urge a safe merry Christmas with tips from Fire Inspector S R Dyke and the NFPA. Choose a fresh tree, keep water topped, keep away from heat, spray with fire retardant, and remove quickly after holidays. Use UL CSA labeled lights, check cords, turn off lights when away, and have an escape plan. Avoid candles near trees and smoking around decorations. Dispose of wrappings and discarded tree safely and keep matches away from children. If a fire occurs, evacuate and call the fire department.
