Freezing rain iced highways around Winchester causing minor injuries from a sidewalk fall to a wreck on Route 522. A Ford driven by C. Lee Whitacre sustained heavy damage. he escaped with minor injuries. Five state crews treated slick surfaces starting 3 pm, with worst conditions on Route 50 and Route 522 north of Winchester.

Driver Summoned On Reckless Charge After Route 50 Crash

Jerry Nelson Clark 71 of North Loudoun Street is summoned for reckless driving after a 日报 accident at Route 50 and Route 522 west of the city. He struck Floyd Hoff 31 of Boyce in a 1936 Plymouth causing about 475 dollars damage. Clark’s 1936 Pontiac sustained about 250 dollars damage and he suffered a bruised right knee.

Attorney General Clark announced the indictment of the Boston Fruit and Produce Exchange and 12 produce firms for conspiring to fix egg prices in New England. The federal grand jury in Boston charged them under anti-trust laws with a maximum penalty of a $5,000 fine for organizations on conviction.

H. Jr. Duke of Virginia Woolen Co. becomes safety and accident prevention chairman for the Winchester Frederick County Red Cross chapter. Power Co Plans Generating Plant Near Front Royal

Potomac Edison Co of Hagerstown registered with the SEC to sell 4 million in 30 year bonds and 1 million in common stock to West Penn Electric to finance a 14.788 million three year construction program. The main project is a new generating station near Front Royal Virginia, expected ready late 1949 at an estimated cost of 6.5 million.

Clarke County Holds Rat Eradication Meeting in Berryville

Orchardists farmers and other interested persons gathered in Berryville Clarke county at the courthouse to outline plans for a county-wide rat eradication drive set for early next year. Taft Seeks Senate Endorsement of Anti-inflation Plan

Senator Taft announced he would push a three point Republican anti inflation bill through the Senate before adjournment of the special session. He said he abandoned efforts to strike a House agreement and preferred to proceed in the Senate with the modified Walcott bill. Power Failure Paralyzes Star Area as Lines Burn

A 75 minute power outage hit the south end of the city and part of the county after a main Kent Street feeder burned in four spots. The Northern Virginia Power Co reported wind and sleet may have caused the fault. no injuries were recorded though lines carried 4,000 volts and toppled onto streets near the Economy Machine Shop and the Evening Star office.

Six Navy Airmen Killed in Air Collision at Norfolk Navy Yard

Six naval airmen died when a Corsair fighter and a patrol bomber collided midair over Norfolk naval air station. The two aircraft crashed. seven aboard the bomber survived.

Driver Fined After Drunken Driving Plea in West Virginia

Percy Carl Sponaugle of Franklin was fined 100 and costs by Trial Justice W. Erle Edwards on a drunken driving charge after a nolo contendere plea. A jail sentence was suspended. A prior bench warrant for reckless driving had been sworn last month after manslaughter charges were dismissed by Judge Eliott Marshall. Sponaugle drove a truck involved in a November 1946 collision that killed Mrs. Alverta Steele.

Eggs Return To Jap Ration At 20 Cents Each

Tokyo reports eggs will reenter Japanese food rations for the first time in four years, with distribution limited to children. Official price is 10 yen each, about 20 cents, while black market sales run at 18 yen apiece.

Clarke County safety council praised for traffic death reduction

E H Williams Jr executive director of the State highway safety committee lauded Clarke county safety council for reducing traffic fatalities in Virginia. He noted fewer deaths to Dec 1 than last year despite a 14.9 percent rise in traffic volume and a 38.6 percent drop in pedestrian fatalities. Ralph Dorsey chairs the local group.
