The U S 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial in a damages suit by Pearl S Whittaker widow of Vance E Whittaker who died in an ambulance crash near Winchester on December 17 1958. The case involves an ambulance owned by the Winchester Volunteer Rescue Squad and a collision with an auto driven by Mary E Van Fossan.
The President will light a 75 foot Christmas tree with 4 000 lights in a ceremony to be televised December 20 from 5 to 5 30 p.m. Eastern Time. The event occurs in a park behind the White House groves and will be broadcast nationwide.

The federal Civil Defense program to be sent to Congress next month will cost about 700 million dollars and include incentive payments for shelter construction in schools hospitals and public welfare institutions. It provides federal guidance but no money for home shelters and targets shelter spaces for about 20 million persons in the coming fiscal year. A booklet on fallout shelters will be available early January and a fact sheet outlined government details.

A Union Pacific passenger train struck a school bus near Evans Colorado killing at least 20 children. The bus carried about 30 students and the crash sent bodies and belongings across the intersection. The train continued to La Salle with no injuries reported. A temporary morgue was set up in downtown Greeley.
World famed artist Grandma Moses died at 101 in Hoosick Falls New York with nurses at her side and Dr Clayton Shaw reporting she spent most of the day in an oxygen tent. She had asked to go home and died at 3 15 pm with family in attendance. President Kennedy called her death a loss to American life.
