Alexander, Head of Secondary Education, Dies
Dr. Fred M. Alexander, 60, director of secondary education for Virginia, died after a six day illness in a Richmond hospital. He helped shape nationwide and Virginian secondary education, served on President Roosevelt’s commission, and authored a study on education for African Americans in Virginia. He taught at Columbia, William and Mary, and various state teachers colleges and led Newport News high school before becoming state supervisor of Negro education in 1936. Survivors include his widow Lucille Churchill, a daughter, and a grandson. Funeral set for 3 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Richmond with Hollywood Cemetery interment.

Evelyn Williams known as Mammy Evelyn died November 21 1882 at The Glen home of Capt William Page Carter. She was buried in the Saratoga Pages family lot at Old Chapel Clarke County. Pallbearers were Confederate veterans R Power Page John Esten Cooke Capt Carter and Thomas H B Randolph and two Black men Henry Randolph and Jack Lockley.

Art Dealer Beaten After Provoking Crowd on Winchester Street
Richard Evans an Absecon N J art dealer staying at the George Washington hotel was assaulted on Winchester Street by a 52 year old stranger amid a crowd of onlookers. Budd y Miller 19 and Guy Lofton 22 were charged with assault and disorderly conduct. Evans described being punched and knocked down as bystanders watched and later found his missing pocketbook. He was treated and discharged from the hospital.

The state highway department completed about a third of a mile of new five foot concrete sidewalk along Route 11 on the east side of Middletown to the northern limits. Middletown Boy Scouts Open New Clubhouse
A new one room cinder block clubhouse on town property beside the fire house is nearly finished for the Middletown Boy Scout troop. The first meeting was held Friday night. Estimated value was 1000 to 1200 dollars but the project cost 300 thanks to donated labor and materials. Scoutmaster H T Green Jr said work began last spring with masons and other trades donating services while the troop members helped.
