Pauley Admits He's Grain Speculator Holding Army Post
Edwin W. Pauley testified before the Senate appropriations committee that neither President Truman nor Secretary of Agriculture Anderson could have known he was operating in the commodities market. He said he is about 100000 worse off after selling futures since taking the Army post on September 3 and disclosed his holdings fell from 500000 to about 50000 bushels. He described his trades as a hedge against inflation and said he did rather well this year. He denied that Truman could have known of his October activities and discussed a possible permanent Army post with Senator Taft, noting the arrangement was temporary.
