Water main leak creates ice on Jefferson Street area
City Manager Wendell L. Seldon reported a regular maintenance leak on a two inch galvanized water line on Jefferson Street just west of Valley Avenue. The combination of last night's freezing temps produced a strip of ice and water pools on Valley Avenue this morning. Maintenance crews were repairing the line today.

G G Baker 75 of 431 Jefferson St former Winchester city sergeant died in a Winchester nursing home after a long illness. He served 24 years as city sergeant from 1941 to 1965 and was active in Grace Lutheran Church Lions Club Veterans of Foreign Wars Elks American Legion and local Democratic Committee. He was a World War I veteran.

Arson Probe Into Area Fires Underway
Frederick County Sheriff investigators examine two fires on Rt. 50 east of Winchester for arson links. A barn owned by Francis Lages near Town and Country Store burned with 2,700 bales of hay and spread to fields. Shawnee and other departments worked to control it. A second fire at Carper's Valley Schoolhouse caused minor damage. a kerosene-like can was found and arson is again suspected.
