A leaking heat exchanger valve on the Saturn 5 service tower halted the nine hour countdown two hours before completion. NASA said the delay would not affect the December 21 blastoff with a three man crew to circle the moon. Engineers will rerun the final nine hours of the practice mission and drain and reload fuel as needed.
A coin resembling a nickel from Vietnam appeared in the Star’s cash drawer. It bears the imprint Cam Ranh Bay NCO Open Mess U S Army and was likely used by mistake to buy a newspaper, or for a meal in Vietnam. The piece raises questions about ownership.
Frederick County Supervisor chair Thomas Rosenberger said the Winchester Frederick County Sanitation Authority water contract for about 400 acres including the yet under construction Robert E Ayler Junior High School remains unsigned. The water supply is needed by April 30 to allow a fall opening. Rosenberger will take the contract to Richmond for convergence with city and county officials and their counsel.
The Viet Cong National Liberation Front says after Johnson ordered a halt to bombing North Vietnam the U.S. B52 strikes over South Vietnam doubled in sorties tripled. Spokesman Duong Dinh Thao claims Da Nang area bombings killed civilians with poison gas and chemical residues.
Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops clashed with American infantry north of Saigon in two fronts, shelling bases and towns and burning 125 homes in two hamlets. U.S. says 16 Americans and 59 enemy dead, 19 Americans wounded, with heavy fighting about 60 miles north of Saigon near An Loc as the 1st Air Cavalry and air support counterattack.
A three judge panel is designated to preside over the recount of the Frederick County liquor by the drink vote from November 5. Chief Justice John W. Eggleston signs the order naming Judge William Moffett Jr., Judge S Bernard Coleman, and Judge Robert K. Woltz to sit in the Frederick County Circuit Court with hearings set as the court determines.
A petition for the recount was filed with the Circuit Court Clerk on November 14. It cites a 15 vote difference in the final tally and claims the Virginia Code allows a recount to verify the result.
Lester Dallas Arnold Sr., 74, of 1303 S Stewart, longtime general sales manager for H F Byrd Inc from 1926 to 1966, died early today in Memorial Hospital. Born January 31, 1894 in Frederick County, he served as Clerk of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and secretary to the late Congressman Henry D Flood before joining U S Senator Harry F Byrd and later worked with Byrd Jr in the apple business. Byrd termed Arnold one of the finest men he knew and said he would miss him greatly.
Moscow reports next year's defense spending at 17.7 billion rubles, up 1 billion from this year as part of a 133.8 billion ruble national budget. Finance Minister Vasily Garbuzov presented the plan amid Western arms race rhetoric and concealed military costs.

Three Winchester policemen Officers Walter Eugene Hillyard Charles Dearmont Pitcock and Ronald Delano Miller received bravery certificates from Mayor William M. Battaile for entering a burning two family dwelling at 690 N Loudoun St at about 1 15 a m on Nov 5 to save Mrs Agnes Henrietta Markwood 72 The officers entered the blaze before the fire department arrived and faced smoke and heat to locate occupants and confirm evacuation while assisting in the life saving effort.

Reports from New York say President-elect Nixon plans to name Democrat Sargent Shriver as U.N. ambassador. Shriver, currently ambassador to France, met Nixon in New York and Washington. His fate as a Nixon appointee remains uncertain as events unfold with Kennedy family connections noted.
