Washington reports a possible Ike delay could force GOP hopefuls into action before filing deadlines. Senator Knowland may enter the Illinois primary if no word by January 23, with consent not required in Illinois and New Hampshire.
President Eisenhower and his aides met at Camp David to begin formulating a new farm program. Secretary Benson and a large cast of agricultural advisers joined the Cabinet session near Gettysburg. Also present were Underscretary Morse, speech writer Kevin McCann, Postmaster General Summerfield, and White House aides Sherman Adams and Wilton Persons.
Councilman H W Butler Jr announces his bid for mayor on the Democratic ticket in Winchester. E William Argenbright enters the Democratic Primary for a second ward council seat on April 3, with petitions circulating. Incumbent mayor M B Clowe Jr will not seek another term. Butler is a World War II veteran elected to the council in 1950 and reelected in 1954.
New NAM head Cola G. Parker told reporters Eisenhower should announce 1956 plans early to allow candidates time to prepare for primaries. He foresees 1956 prosperity, warns AFL CIO merger risks, and backs McCarthy and Knowland as possible nominees if Eisenhower does not run. He supports limited NAM interference in labor talks.
Indiana Supreme Court freed Arnie Roark and Jay Holcomb who faced 10 year auto banditry sentences after aiding a distressed woman. The court ordered their release, saying no proof they planned to steal cars. at most petty larceny if guilty, with one man missing and a shotgun attack during the incident.
In Melbourne Florida a mother Patricia Van Eeghen and her seven year old daughter Phyllis were found beaten to death in a car in front of Brownlie Funeral Home. Police report husband Philip Van Eeghen discovered them missing earlier and identified the bodies. Detective statements describe blunt force trauma and a stabbing-like wound to the girl.
The Post Office Department approves a new uniform restyling for 100000 letter carriers and special delivery messengers. Trousers and jackets stay cadet blue grey while shirts become blue, ties turn maroon, and trim changes from black to new colors.
Twenty seven new paratyphoid cases were reported in Lancaster County, bringing the total known cases to 81. Health authorities could not predict peak timing as most victims are children. Family physicians continue mass inoculations and antibiotic treatment under state aid.
The AFL-CIO announces a massive two year organizing drive led by George Meany and Walter Reuther. Unions pledge four million dollars for the effort targeting chemical textile and paper industries and office workers. The leaders say organizing will lift wages and living standards, proving labor unity in action.
Snow fell across the state with up to two inches in western and central areas. Wet snow melted quickly as temperatures rose from a low near 32 to mid thirties. Roads remained generally good though wet. plows were deployed in Highland County. Weather officials expect clearing later today with scattered flurries possible in western regions.
The U N Political Committee seeks a vote today on a four power arms plan favoring Eisenhower open sky proposals. The Western plan aims to start disarmament talks with focus on the open sky scheme, while the Soviets resist and push their broader disarmament framework.
At a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Child Guidance Clinic the clinic was incorporated and the charter approved by Dr. Joseph E. Barrett and the State Corporation Commission. It will be called Northwestern Virginia Guidance Center with a new board led by Dr. H. P. Maccubbin and aims to broaden coverage to northern Virginia counties. The board plans state support matching two dollars per one raised locally after its first year ending January 1, 1956.
FORRES CITY Ark Two small Negro children, Bera four and Billy Ray two, perished in a house fire while their mother, 30 year old Mrs Ira Gett, held their hands through a barred door. The front of the house collapsed before she could free them and she suffered burns on her hands. Deputy Sheriff Bill Campbell said the cause is unknown.
Secretary of State Dulles in Chicago warns Western nations to bolster alliances and rely on massive yet selective retaliation to deter Soviet aggression. He frames collective security as the foundation for peace and notes a shift to case by case responses using local defenses.
Sheriff Dan Parker said a 34 year old poultry worker admitted slaying Harold Smith, 30, and Arlene Smith, 35, of Lebanon near Carlyle. The suspect, Norvell Ilmore Young, led authorities to nude bodies found in wells near Posey and Boulder. He said he hid the bodies after killing the couple on November 27.
Sarah Elizabeth Fritts, 16, of Boyce has been named Virginia winner in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce. She is a Clarke County High School junior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Fritts.
Martinsburg stores switch to Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in year and keep Saturday 6 p.m. close. Wednesday afternoon closing remains in effect as the Retail Merchants Association votes unanimously to move Friday night hours from Saturday night.

A Chicago killing ends the life of Alex Louis Greenberg, a 64 year old brewer and former mob adviser, shot on a South Side street after leaving a restaurant with his wife. Police consider possible motives tied to a failed payment as investigators search for suspects.
Three rivals Hugh Gaitskell Herbert Morrison and Aneurin Bevan entered the Labour leadership race in Britain with Attlee stepping down due to age and ill health. The winner to be chosen by Labour MPs and announced next Wednesday. Gaitskell favored to win though unity within the party faces strain.
Park Watson Plumly 63 died at 2 05 AM in Winchester Memorial Hospital after a week of illness. Born in Barnsville Ohio he was president and general manager of P W Plumly Lumber Co of Winchester. He was active in Cork St Christian Church Rotary Club Chamber of Commerce past president Shenandoah Manufacturers Assoc Memorial Hospital Board and several trade groups. A 21 year Winchester resident he sponsored softball basketball bowling and ping pong teams.
