Hidden Beale Drawings Reveal Civil War Era Artist
In Philadelphia, 1676 bequeathed black and white wash drawings by Joseph Boggs Beale were found in a Germantown cellar after 35 years stored in trunks. Beale, born 1840, taught drawing, served in the Civil War, and produced 20 years of work for a living while never seeing his art published. Modern Galleries now owns the rediscovered Bealeana.
