Downing Charts a New Country Path Despite Disco Past
Big Al Downing, 39, a Black singer from Spencer Massachusetts, blends country with a disco and R B history, scoring two Top 20 country hits. He says he seeks an occasional boom not rockets, and sees Charley Pride as a peer, not a model. Downing reports no prejudice in country circles and credits a chance studio session for his switch to country after a disco hit faded.
