Rescue workers in London say about 100 people died in a fogbound rush hour collision of two trains carrying commuters and shoppers. Crews recovered 73 bodies and reported 25 to 35 more trapped in twisted coaches.

Edtraund Baxter announces the appointment of Lamont Williamson as Social Security Administration District Manager in Winchester. Williamson succeeds Harry A Nelson who becomes local field representative and will remain at the Boscawen Street office. Williamson, a Duke and UNC graduate, veteran, and former Raleigh regional official, will move to Winchester soon with his wife Janet Cooper and two children.
The Winchester telephone exchange recorded 4500 toll calls in the 24 hours ending last night chief operator Mrs Louisa V Pingley reported the highest daily total in history. The surge is linked to bad weather and hunting season with peak hours 9 to 10 and 10 to 11 am requiring 5 staff and 28 regular plus four auxiliary positions.
