Virginia Snowstorm Leaves Trails of Accidents Across State
Virginia's first substantial snowfall of the season affected counties from Highland to Louisa. Five to seven inches fell in the northwest, with heavy totals near Fredericksburg and Quantico, and lighter snow in Bristol and Blackstone. Dozens of crashes occurred on slick highways, drivers abandoned cars, and chains were urged by the state highway department. Memorial Hospital treated several injuries. one fatality reported in a crash near Fredericksburg.

Fire kills mother and seven children in Arkansas farmhouse
In Marianna, Arkansas, a fire started by an overheated wood stove swept through a farmhouse killing a 37 year old pregnant mother Mrs. J. L. Bowers and her seven children aged 9 to 1. Sheriff Langston said the mother died trying to rescue the children, all found in a bedroom. A separate notice says Battletown Inn Berryville Virginia will close Monday December 2 and reopen in January with a closing notice to follow.

Spectacular crash sends four to hospital on Shirley Highway
Four people were injured when a tractor trailer bound for Richmond skidded on snow and ice on the Shirley Highway. The vehicle hit four cars in the northbound lanes, overturned, tying up traffic for an hour. Elwood S Thrift, 28, of Richmond, driver of the Brock Transfer Co truck, suffered a compound fracture and was listed in good condition. Also injured were Maj Clarence Kaplin, 39, Mrs Mildred R Beeler, 37, and Harvard Cashwell, 38, all of Springfield Fairfax County. Kaplin was taken to Fort Belvoir hospital. the others were treated in Alexandria hospitals.
