A major fire swept the north side of Haysi Virginia’s main street destroying a large building housing several firms and apartments. Estimated losses run above 175000 with only about one fifth insured. Three people suffered non life threatening injuries. one clerk escaped by jumping from a second story window. The blaze started in a furnace room around 6:30 AM and quickly spread, with only two buildings on the south side spared.

In Paintsville Kentucky three men aged 22 to 25 were chained to street posts by order of Police Judge R A Patrick as punishment for refusing fines for drunkenness. Town Marshal Jess Allen bound them with log chains and iron balls, to be kept there except at night until they paid or worked off the fines. Relatives plan legal action.
