An estimated North Vietnamese force ambushed 150 U S air cavalrymen near the Cambodian border north of Saigon. Twenty five Americans were killed and 52 wounded. It was the 1st Air Cavalry Division's heaviest single-battle toll this year. North Vietnamese losses unknown.
President Thieu said South Vietnamese delegates will arrive in Paris on Saturday for talks. He warned no cease-fire prospects are immediate and meetings next week will tackle procedural questions before substantive negotiations begin. The Bangkok briefing noted divides among allies over settlement terms. The report also covers Air Cavalry engagements north of Saigon with heavy fighting and U S bombardment against North Vietnamese forces near Cambodia.
President elect Richard M. Nixon reportedly asked Henry Cabot Lodge to head the American negotiating team in Paris. Lodge, ambassador to West Germany, is said to be eager to take the post while Nixon awaits selection of a new Secretary of State.

He recalled Christ's question to the disciples and urged fidelity to St. Paul.
President-elect Nixon rejects offering Hubert Humphrey the U.N. post and names Paul McCracken of the University of Michigan to head the Council of Economic Advisors. Nixon hints Lodge may lead negotiations team in Paris as talks continue.

Norman Bennett of Washington argued Detroit dictates rules to spur profits, citing ornamental bumpers and higher wear from high speed. Athell Yon of Charleston blamed consumers for demanding too much while repair costs could drop with pragmatic parts design. Louis Baffa echoed easier repairs with functional bumpers.
Israeli forces say a French made Super Mystere fighter bomber failed to return after a 90 minute attack on Iraqi artillery installations east and west of Irbid in Jordan. An Israeli pilot parachuted to safety and a rescue was reported. The raid began at noon and ended 1 30 p.m. and followed cross border strikes amid escalating hostilities.

A two alarm blaze in Harrisonburg gutted a fabric shop and tire storage area, damaged a restaurant, barber shop, and a theatre roof. About 100 firefighters from five localities fought the fire from 2 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. No serious injuries, two firefighters treated, power restored by day’s end, losses estimated at 200000 with insurance partial.
