55 May Have Died in Lake Temiscouata Fire
Quebec Provincial Police said up to 55 residents were unaccounted for after a fast spreading fire swept a three story wooden home on Lake Temiscouata 120 miles northeast of Quebec City. Of about 75 to 80 occupants 69 were elderly with 17 bedridden. Staff numbered about 10. Fire began around 6 am with nurses escaping by jumping from windows. Thirty local firefighters plus nearby reinforcements fought the blaze. 15 survivors were hospitalized while others found shelter with nearby families.
