Atom Energy Aid To Next Year's Crops Promised
Washington December 2 The first major results of atomic energy experiments on farm problems may reach farmers in time for the 1949 growing season. A meeting of 40 farm scientists from state agricultural colleges prepared a 1949 farm research program funded by the Atomic Energy Commission. Scientists anticipate guidance on using radioactive phosphorus to study plant uptake and soil interaction, among many other experiments nationwide.

Local history recalls Randal Evans who ran a famed Winchester restaurant on Loudoun Street famed for oysters and fine cooking. Evans, once a slave emancipated in 1833, stayed in Virginia under a later act to help his family. He died in 1871 and is buried in Clarke County.

CHAPEL HILL, N. C., Dec 2 A tenfold rise in income tax evasion cases referred to the Justice department for criminal action was reported. Assistant Attorney General Theron L. Caudle said evasion has matured as a crime and many defendants will be reputable citizens or civic leaders. He noted prosecutions are small compared to millions of annual returns.
