Farmer Grows Apples Beef And Chestnuts
Sperryville farmer E. Johnson Jr. operates 770 acres in Rappahannock County with beef cattle and apple orchards plus a chestnut operation. His 80 chestnut trees produce about 1,500 pounds annually from Abundance and Nanking varieties, sprayed for beetles and worms. He keeps 126 Black Angus, including 100 cows and 23 calves, and participates in the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association with seven BCIA feeding-test bulls. Johnson moved toward a purebred herd, harvesting calves at Front Royal sales and using BCIA data to improve gains. 187 acres support apple production as a major income source.
