A fast freight train hit a loaded school bus in a snowstorm near Salt Lake City, killing 26 students aged 12 to 16 and seriously injuring others. The bus carried 40 to 60 pupils en route to Jordan High School. bodies scattered along the tracks as rescuers recovered victims and identified the dead.
Mr Winchester urges readers to shop early and mail early to ensure a smoother Christmas. He notes Christmas savings funds totaling 94 000 have been distributed recently and invites readers to consider New Year resolutions.

Col. R. R. McCormick owner of the Chicago Tribune arrived at Winchester Municipal Airport at 3 10 this afternoon in his private Grauman amphibian. He left by automobile for an estate near Middleburg where he is expected to stay about a month. The plane piloted by Howard H. West will return to Chicago.
The Navy Department awarded a 35 000 ton battleship contract to New York Shipbuilding Corp Camden N J for 52 794 000 dollars. The price reflected a 2 000 000 reduction from the company bid.

Lance of Plainfield New Jersey drove the opposing car. Mrs Hark has a fractured knee and contusions while August suffers a fractured thigh. Mrs. Lance and her son are in Westchester Hospital with a fractured jaw and shock. The accident followed icy road conditions while returning from Thanksgiving with relatives in Philadelphia.
Berlin reports the foreign office sent the United States embassy a note in the nature of an acknowledgement. The note concerns the American request for assurances that the Nazi decree expelling Jews from business enterprises would not apply to Jews with American citizenship.
William E. Dodd Jr, former Democratic hopeful in Virginia's Eighth District, was hired by the Works Progress Administration as an assistant in its personnel division in Washington. Dodd ran in the primary as a 100 percent new dealer against Representative Howard Smith.
The Naval Observatory reports three instances in late 1937 where crystal oscillator temperature control failed causing large errors in time signals. The superintendent notes the error as 0.452 second and says corrections were made before the hour’s final transmission.

Winchester Lodge 867 plans memorial service Sunday at 3 PM with Rep Clifton Woodrum of Roanoke Va delivering the oration. The Chanters directed by Floyd Haines will sing, joined by Rev Robert B Nelson of Christ Episcopal and Maxweil D Mathews. One lodge member, Howard Metz Solenberger, died this year.
Treasury reports for November 29 show receipts of 9.34 million dollars and expenditures of 25.06 million. Gross debt stands at 38.59 billion, marking a small rise from the prior period.
