The 163rd annual session of the Synod of Virginia will convene at 8 p.m. at the Winchester church with about 300 delegates from 457 churches in Virginia parts of West Virginia Maryland Pennsylvania Baltimore and DC. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the Winchester Presbyterian Church and restoration of the Old Stone Church on East Piccadilly Street.

Migratory Workers Arrive in Winchester for Apple Harvest
The first migratory workers have arrived in Winchester to assist with the apple harvest. F W Bailey of the Virginia Employment Service says sixty workers came last week after peach picking in Crozet. Another sixty are expected this week and possibly 80 more after Labor Day. All will be housed at the Frederick County Fruit Growers Labor Camp on Fairmont Avenue extended. An additional 198 Bahamans are slated to arrive September 20. Directors of the local growers association meet tomorrow to finalize labor camp operations.

Ham sale ties to Frederick assault case in Virginia
Investigation into a 36 pound sugar cured country ham sold for $10 led deputies to a felonious assault case. Charles Nelson Curry, 32, of Milldale Warren County was arrested at 2 a.m. and charged with wounding Mary W. Stoehr with a bottle and fists at Sun Dial Service Station. Bond set at $3,000. Officials say Curry bought the ham from an unknown man and may link to other thefts of hams in Fauquier and Clarke counties.

Hurricane Heads For New Orleans
The Gulf hurricane moved toward New Orleans and was expected to strike the Louisiana coast this afternoon and reach the Mississippi and Alabama coasts tonight. Winds up to 95 mph extended 100 miles from the center with gales to 250 miles. Officials warned of dangerous tides from east Louisiana to Pensacola and urged evacuation to higher ground.

Edward Collier Killed in Korea From Stephens City
Private Edward L. Collier 18, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Collier of near Stephens City, was killed in action in Korea. A War Department telegram was delivered to his wife at their Macedonia Road home. He was the first county fatality reported in the Korean fighting. He leaves his parents and a number of brothers and sisters.

East Greenwich police say 27 year old lodger Ed win H Reynolds will be charged with murder and arson for killing Fred J Dusza 39 and his family of five in a fire damaged home. Reynolds allegedly bludgeoned and strangled the victims during four hours of terror and then set the house ablaze. The dead include Mrs Beatrice Dusza 31 and their three children rp 11 Kathryn 8 Gail 3. Dusza's dog led investigators to Reynolds hiding place.

Truck Demolished In Road Accident On Valley Ave
A 1935 Chevrolet truck owned by Bentley Kinney and driven by Aubrey Hartley skidded off Valley Ave just south of Winchester, knocking down a Ritz Lee sign, toppling a wall, damaging a power line pole, and striking a parked car. Hartley said he was crowded off the highway. Damages total about 110 dollars to the truck with 110 additional for the sign pole and car repairs. Winchester officers Cain and Stotler investigated.

Two people were hospitalized after separate non collision wrecks. A Masser Motor Co tractor trailer from Hagerstown overturned on Route 50, pinning the driver William Hendrickson who was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition. Earlier, a 1947 Plymouth on Route 522 struck a tree injuring Benjamin Holland passenger Solomon Holland escaped injuries. Benjamin was admitted briefly before release.
