Allied defense around the Pohang area stiffened as South Korean forces retook Kigye and repelled North Korean assaults. U S Eighth Army said 40 000 to 60 000 Reds were building for a large drive while British infantry arrived to reinforce the line. Bombers hit Chongjin rail yards and coastal supply routes as tension remained high along the central front near Taegu and Masan.
Washington dispatch reports John L Lewis telling AFL President William Green that coal miners will not accept any AFL inspired no strike pledge. Lewis rebuked Green and CIO officers quoting papers about a pledged nonstriking stance and warned against selling miners down the river. The United Mine Workers act as an independent union, having left the AFL in December 1947, while past ties with CIO and AFL are noted.
President Truman plans a late week radio address outlining belt tightening due to the Korean War. White House sources say a draft is ready as Congress debates wage and price control authority and related anti inflation measures.
The 1896 Daily Item copies show Hellers selling best package coffee for 15 cents a pound and other staples at low prices such as peas five cents per can and sugar corn four cents per can. The note also mentions rising marriage licenses from 91 to 115 and local holiday decorations on a Kent Street tree.
County Superintendent Robert E Ayler released the instruction roster for 15 schools. At Gainesboro School principal Fred C Braithwaite will oversee a veteran staff including Russell L Fletcher Nell M Braithwaite Mayvoreen S Watkins Jeannette F Braithwaite Edith Braithwaite and Winifred W Rogers. Gore School retains veteran teachers with four transfers from other county schools. Transfers include Elizabeth Keckley Evelyn V Keller Lucille Z Lineburg and Myrtle Breckenridge. Frank L Whitacre returns as Gere principal with Clementine L Ward also returning.
Frederick County outlines 1950 51 term changes with Stephens City serving Grades One Eight for most pupils from Stephens City and surrounding routes. Mt Airy closes with transfers to Stephens City. Middletown retains Grades One Eight but shifts Dunkard Lane and Highview students to Stephens City. Vaucluse becomes district dividing line.
Reds throw roadblock behind Allied lines on Yongchong road near Pohang and threaten the east coast. Reds advance four miles in the central sector of the northern front as Allied forces hold elsewhere along a 120 mile perimeter. British troops land to contest beside Americans and South Koreans as a large Red offensive appears imminent. U S Navy pounds Reds at Pohang and South Korean Navy reports sinking two Reds vessels while B 29s hit railroads at Chongjin. Light bombers pound supply lines and other Allied planes inflict heavy toll. Administrations officials fear open conflict between President Truman and General MacArthur could shake confidence of Asia and U N members. Russia sets sights on Formosa as focus for new propaganda in the Security Council.
Temperature tops 91 degrees for the second day in a row as Winchester Research Laboratory recorded 85 last Friday. The cold spell shifted to 90 Saturday and cooled to 89 Sunday. Forecasters say the warm humid spell will persist into tonight and Wednesday with scattered thundershowers likely.
Cpl. Allen Beistline was injured in a non collision accident at 2 30 a m en route to Quantico after visiting his wife Miss Margaret Ann Greenawalt at her parents home on Euclid Avenue The Plains. He lost control and his car left the road near The Plains and is now at Bethesda Hospital Maryland with cuts and bruises his condition not serious.
Winchester stores will close tomorrow after noon for the last time this summer. Beginning next week shops will stay open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays. Clyde S. Campbell, president, also announced that Winchester stores will be closed all day on Labor Day Monday.
At Lake Success the Soviet delegate Malik pushed to place Formosa aggression charges on the Security Council agenda. The United States rejected the move, insisting Korea be addressed first, while Chinese Communist charges against the U S and British actions in Hong Kong drew parallel protests.
Wilbur and Charles Johnston of Explorer Post 9 Boy Scouts left Williamsport Md at 6 30 am bound for Washington and Alexandria by Potomac River route. They aim to reach Old Dominion Boat Club in Alexandria Friday afternoon stopping at Potomac Canoe Club Washington. They carry duffle bags sleeping bags pup tents food and camping gear and will camp shore side at night and shop en route. Wilbur a Randolph Macon College student and Charles a post office employee are skilled swimmers with life saving training.
A five day forecast for Virginia shows temperatures a bit above normal with little variation. Scattered showers are likely with total rainfall from a quarter to three quarters of an inch.

Five people were hospitalized after two automobile crashes yesterday with property damage totaling 1775 dollars. The first collision on Route 522 near Gainesnoro involved W H Specht of Pittsburgh and Charles R Shirley of Berkeley Springs. Specht lost control on a wet road and his car struck Shirley’s, injuring multiple parties. A second crash on Route 50 near Round Hill school west of Winchester injured no one but caused further damage. A third incident on Ker Street injured John H Codke, minor injuries from a lumber truck collision while he crossed to seek directions.
The CIO Executive Board expelled two unions, the West Coast Longshoremen and Warehousemen Union led by Harry Bridges and the Marine Cooks and Stewards led by Hugh Bryson, amid a purge of 11 unions for Communist Party alignment. Bridges’ group was ousted 41 to 2, with Robertson and Bryson dissenting. Bryson’s union was removed 41 to 1, the sole opposing vote cast by Bryson.
London reports Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip named their newborn daughter Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. The birth at Clarence House confirms the infant’s royal title Her Royal Highness Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise of Edinburgh. The name honors Queen Elizabeth and historical royal figures with links to Philip and Britain's lineage.
Two 18 year old girls were held in the Winchester Police lockup today pending information from Hillside Pa. They gave names as Rosemary Clark and Florence Hertzod and said they came here over the weekend seeking employment. They were booked on charges of loitering.
