The Rev. Frank W. Kerfoot, a Clarke county Baptist pastor, was killed when his car was struck by a Norfolk and Western freight train near the Quaker Church in Lynchburg while returning from vacation. His wife and three children were injured and taken to a Lynchburg hospital. the family includes his mother and five brothers. He had recently been appointed a first lieutenant in the U S Army and planned to enter service soon.

New Compulsory Education Law Enforced in Winchester County
The new compulsory education law, approved by the state Legislature, is in force and will apply in Winchester Frederick and Clark counties this session. It requires children aged eight to twelve to attend school at least sixteen weeks per session starting at opening and maintaining continuous attendance. School boards and the division superintendent enforce it, with penalties for noncompliance. Winchester schools open next Monday September 2, Middletown High on September 9, others by October 14.
