NO COMPROMISE FOR DEPT OF JUSTICE WASHINGTON August 26 Depart ment of Justice officials refuse to accept the compromise proposed by the Senate agricultural committee on the amendment to the food control act to penalize profiteering. Department officials Senator Smith of George authored the compromise plan said insisted on the profiteer penalties approved by the House, declaring the committee's amendments would make the department's authority doubtful.

The Federal Trade Commission urged in a special report that the operation and ownership of refrigerator cars used for meat transport be taken over by the government. It cited that the five largest packers own about 90 percent of such equipment and control railcar distribution, seeking licensing for railroads thereafter.

Washington August 26 under a blanket amendment to the peace treaty the Senate foreign relations committee agreed American representation would be eliminated from most European reconstruction commissions except the reparation commission and others appointed by the League of Nations. The change would affect about twenty commissions and alter the treaty language in over fifty places.
London reports the war office says General Denikin's anti Bolshevik forces in southern Russia push forward rapidly along the entire western front, continuing an aggressive advance as of this evening.
Harry N. Taylor president of the National Coal Association testified before the Senate committee on the coal situation stating a plan for government to buy the mines and turn them over to the miners for operation. He noted miners already demand a six hour day and a five day week.
COLL TAKEN TO OKLAHOMA E W Collis owner of Shenandoah Valley Auto Supply Company on West Water Street was taken to Miami Oklahoma yesterday afternoon by Sheriff Neil Hart and Deputy Sheriff J Sullivan charged with embezzlement. He had been out on $1000 bail since Aug 15. He surrendered in police court with counsel Ray McNaughton.
