The western district board of Virginia sustains most local exemptions while approving one occupational claim. Henry Pitzer of Rest is discharged on agricultural grounds after extensive affidavits. 34 other names are slated for army service unless appealed to the President. The list includes Winchester and Gore areas with several residents named. Also noted is a public sale notice near Mountain Falls.
Paris Aug 24 The Verdun front hill 204 fell to French forces after a storm assault. The German trenches on the height were taken, giving France total control of the dominant position that has witnessed heavy fighting this war.
Plans for the largest troop movement in U S history are being perfected by the Railroads War Board at the government's request. A total of 687000 men will be transported to cantonments and training camps starting September 5 with 200000 entrained by September 9.
Wanted ads seek coopers to make apple barrels and an orchard foreman at Turkey Knob Orchard Mt Jackson Va. First class stock steady work good pay and board to November 1st. Position postings indicate local employment in a Virginia orchard setting.
At an Atlantic port on August 24, the American tanker Navajo crew declared they sunk the first of Germanys 400-foot submarines after a 24 hour fight off the Irish coast. The conning tower was shot away and the sub sank. Navajo lost part of its stern and a lifeboat and was later destroyed by fire.
Canadian troops at Lens southern edge repelled heavy German counterattacks last night and held the position captured yesterday. The war office called the fighting fierce as German trenches northwest of Green Crassier were attacked and driven back by sustained machine gun fire. A separate note mentions Miss Margaret B. Lewis departing for Atlantic City to visit Mrs. Richard Evelyn Byxde.
The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Winchester published a booklet listing Frederick county apple growers with addresses and estimated 1917 crop barrels. The Star prints names such as Adams T. B. and Bro., Adams W., Apple Ridge Orchard Co., Baker families, Barrett C. M., Campbell John H., and many others with specific addresses in Winchester, Stephens City, Clearbrook, White Hall, and vicinity.
Herbert C. Hoover, national food administrator, leaves Washington for Chicago to meet meat packers and investigators amid rising hog prices. A Chicago conference with editors and packers is planned to discuss price regulation as government talks move toward packing industry controls.
Captain Hugh McCulloch writes from France that Winchester donors send cigarettes to wounded soldiers. He recalls how a bowl of hot soup precedes a box of cigarettes, and notes soldiers smile as they puff. Government rations allow five cigarettes daily, but troops crave more. Even severely wounded men rest in bed, smoking to feel soothed.
Washington reports Secretary Daniels ordered the four or five biggest yards to complete the 150 destroyers as soon as ships in stock are launched. Protests from shipping interests claim merchantman production should not be secondary to naval orders. Daniels remains firm, insisting the order be carried out as Britain shifts to more merchant shipbuilding.
Prices for anthracite coal set to take effect September 1 with ranges from 4.00 to 4.90 per ton for various coal types and regional delivery charges. Jobbers may add up to twenty or thirty cents per ton depending on location, while bituminous jobbers are limited to fifteen cents per ton. Protests noted as industry groups vow support for President Wilson and coal regulation efforts.
In Houston a race riot erupts as about 80 to 100 black soldiers from the Twenty fourth Infantry barricade themselves in a baseball park. Captain J W Mattes of Illinois Artillery is killed and bodies are mutilated as martial law is imposed and reinforcements arrive from Galveston.
Miss Belle Madison of near Lexington identifies William Toman and Edward Trundle as men arrested for attempting to assault her. The girl’s condition is serious due to spasms. Lieut. Thomas B. Byrd left his home on Amherst Street to report to Petersburg Virginia for assignment related to training young men in the National Army. He had spent a week with his parents Mr and Mrs Reverend Byrd before leaving for duty.
