Amendment offered by Senator Weaver of Front Royal is accepted authorizing Revenue Commissioners to issue licenses until court action settles the matter.
The Virginia General Assembly moved a Staples-Eggleston bill to hold a statewide referendum on October 3 to decide between retaining prohibition or adopting liquor control. The measure omits a dispensary vs license option and expands a liquor study commission from nine to fifteen members.
Walker McC Bond, noted Winchester fruit grower and businessman, elected chairman of the Winchester and Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross to succeed Rev. Robert B. Nelson. Nelson steps down after 11 years. Eddy re elected secretary. Scully named treasurer. Teets trains new regional plan with Miss Margaret Hurst. Local chapter gearing up for reorganized structure and Lexington Regional Conference on Sept 19.
Announcement this afternoon postpones the Stines Chapel picnic planned for tomorrow to Friday because of inclement weather. The event will be held at the same location as previously stated.
Father Charles E. Coughlin testified before a one man grand jury in Detroit about banking and financial systems as crowds packed the courtroom and corridors. Former President Herbert Hoover sent a telegram saying his information was second hand and urged officials to consult the Reconstruction Finance Corporation the Federal Reserve and the Treasury for details.
Richmond resident John J. Wicker Jr. replies to Grady Moore’s attack over his role in American Legion politics. He accuses Moore of malice for striking while Wicker was away for a Senate finance committee hearing and notes Homer Bowen’s Republican candidate status in a battle over leadership.
Senator Couzens urged calling former president to testify in the investigation after a Hoover remark to a bank director described Couzens as a very dangerous man. The testimony aims to reveal connections between the presidential figure and the probe.
Mrs Mary C Brown widow of Edward Walker Brown died yesterday afternoon at the home of her niece Mrs Edgar Abrell near Paynes Chapel Berkeley County West Virginia after long illness. She leaves three brothers Joseph C Keller Walter S Keller Read ing Kansas and Charles L Keller Ridgeway West Virginia. Funeral will be at Paynes Chapel Methodist Church Thursday after noon with relatives meeting at the Abrell home at 2 pm and services conducted by Rev W Stevens and Rev W R Hardesty. Interment in church cemetery.
Mason Mangham Virginia state chairman of the Presidents Reemployment Committee said a district business meeting will be held in Berryville tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. Andrew Bell of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce urged all Winchester business men to attend to discuss pressing NRA concerns. The district covers Clarke Frederick Warren Fauquier King William Fairfax Arlington Loudoun Rappahannock and the city of Winchester.
Persons desiring to apply for police force positions and all elective Common Council posts must submit written applications to Mr. F. H. Krebs Clerk of the Council or at the City Manager’s office before the first regular September 1933 meeting. August 23, 1933.
The body of David Michael Hook age 62 formerly of Winchester was interred at Mount Hebron Cemetery after a Baltimore and Ohio freight train fatally struck him at Martinsburg West Virginia while he sat on cross ties near the railroad yards. Funeral services were held in Martinsburg. He died three hours after removal to a hospital and is survived by his widow five children four sisters and three brothers.
Severe wind and rainstorm in northern Virginia forces postponement of the Warrenton horse show from today to tomorrow and Friday at the show grounds. Dances remain as scheduled tonight and tomorrow with Don Bester and Orchestra providing music.

State Police report multiple minor accidents as a 40 mile per hour gale tears through the area. Creeks and the river rise steadily while street cleaning crews remove debris and clear roadways.
A man was killed when a large tree blew down and fell on his automobile along the Winchester Washington road near Purcellville Loudoun county Virginia. Ralph Gildart of Clarendon VA and Arnold bus passengers witnessed the tragedy as the car driver died before help arrived. The crash occurred shortly before 11 30 this morning a short distance west of Purcellville.
A 40 mile gale of hurricane force winds hit this section this morning reaching a climax around noon. No fatalities reported by local hospital and state police. Electric lines and telephones down. Northern Virginia Power crews and local teams repairing as lines are restored. Some streets in Winchester lost power but no outlying towns isolated by afternoon.
A. Lincoln Wisler of the United Business Men's Association of Chicago branded small retailers with under 500 investment as the main source of unfair competition at retail code hearings. He estimated about 425000 such shopkeepers and said they undermine honest local retailing and avoid business associations.
Financial markets showed inflationary fever briefly in early trading but soon returned to normal. The first hour had high stock turnover with fractional gains across a broad range. Sterling cables traded at 4.51 and call money stood at 1 percent.

Ellis Rhodes 17 of Friedens Pennsylvania drowned after falling from an aquaplane on Deep Creek Lake near McHenry Maryland. Rescuers reached him twice as he struggled toward shore but he sank for the third time before Stahl of Somerset could assist.

In Harrisonburg the delay in Shenandoah Park fairs spurs a mass meeting of East Rockingham leaders set for Elkton to push for public access this fall. Sixty Elkton citizens sign the call.
A powerful storm system driven by a northeast gale and a tropical hurricane raged off Virginia and the Mid Atlantic. The Hastern Steamship liner Madison carrying 90 plus aboard sent an SOS as a coast guard cutter rushed to Cape Charles, while Maryland and New Jersey suffered widespread damage and outages.
A violent storm described as a hurricane or near hurricane by naval and weather officials was reported sweeping inland from the Virginia capes on a generally northwesterly course.
The coastal steamer Madison carrying more than 90 aboard sent SOS calls off Cape Charles Virginia just after 7 am. The Carabasset Coast Guard cutter hurried to assist. Thirty seven were passengers and the ship reported the loss of its entire forward house and cut radio signals. Details remained unclear.
