About 2,000 attend an orchard picnic where prominent fruit-growers discuss advertising strategies and the apple market following a noon lunch. Leaders address pressing industry problems and urge stronger promotional efforts.
E W J Hearty spoke at the annual orchard picnic meeting of fruit growers of Virginia and nearby states at Senator Harry F Byrds Green Orchard on Apple Pie Ridge. About 2500 attendees from Virginia West Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania viewed speeches stressing advertising to housewives the healthful appeal of apples and the need to boost domestic demand amid competition from oranges. The day included tours of the 200 acre Green Orchard and discussions on tariffs sanitary rules and expanding U S apple markets.
William Jennings Bryan, in Japan, refused wine at a banquet and proposed a toast to water. The Evening Star’s Washington Information Bureau republished the exchange after a reader inquiry. The ode to water extols water as life giving, sun summoned, earth nourished, and a divine dawn’s creation.
Virginia Lee Corbin once a juvenile film star appears in court as she seeks to regain custody of Harold Philip aged four and Robert aged 18 months from husband Theodore Krol. Krol filed for divorce claiming Corbin unfit to care for the children and was granted temporary custody.

Rochester Minnesota August 22 Gov Foyd B Olson remained under medical care at Mayo Clinic after a serious abdominal ailment. A bulletin reported he spent a comfortable night and that his ability to take nourishment increased, signaling a continued rally.
The City of Winchester invites sealed bids for coal with details available at the City Manager’s office. Also appears an advertisement seeking apples for apple sauce from Shenandoah Valley Apple Cider & Wingera Co. and related listing.
In a special session the Common Council approved purchasing an incinerator for up to 15600 and moved to resolve disposal issues. A poll showed eight favoring the incinerator and two favoring land purchase while two councilors did not vote, with opposition to quarry placement noted.
Washington slugged three home runs in a single fourth inning as Kress Kuhel and Reynolds connected off A’s starter Rhodes. The burst, part of a five hit inning, tied the American League record for homers in one inning, a mark reached 20 previous times. major league best is four in an inning.
George Johnston, 75, who for years operated a Front Royal jewelry store, died at his home at 1 p.m. after a period of illness. He is survived by his wife Minnie Jones Johnston, daughter Mrs. Leo Murray of Washington, D. C., and two sons Thomas Johnston, who with his father ran the shop, and Charles Johnston of Hot Springs, Va. Funeral arrangements had not been completed.

Most favor a new supply with Cedar Creek preferred by several, while some favor springs or are undecided. AP dispatch from Pamplona reports southern rebel troops nearing Toledo thirty miles from Madrid as Fascist forces widen a big push toward the capital. Columns move from the north, advancing under artillery and air bombardment toward San Sebastian, with strategic pauses to consolidate positions.

Warrants are out for several others said to have engaged in a fighting and scrap cutting. Robert A. Cone and his wife of Shamokin Pa crashed into a fence near the Hardesty property tearing down 17 steel posts. he claimed another car forced him off the road. Neither were injured.
In Excelsior Springs Missouri a one story brick building at the Ball Health School was wrecked by an undetermined explosion. William Hildiebrand aged 24 a painter was killed when the concrete first floor crushed him in the basement. Two others were injured in the blast occurring today.
West Middlesex, Pa. August 22 Governor Alf M Landon argued the presidential race offers a choice between New Deal policies and freedom of enterprise. Speaking near his birthplace he warned democracy faces retreat, urging Americans to reject despair and pursue security and abundance without sacrificing liberty. The speech warned against government overreach and urged continuation of individual initiative as the nation faces a new frontier. (Continued on page nine)

Jervey assistant secretary of Fidelity-Phenix Fire Insurance Company of Richmond Va in recognition of over 25 years of service in this territory. Philip F. Brown Jr accompanied Jervey to Winchester for the presentation as Grim was away from his Hansbrough and Carter office.
