Miss Clarke County to Be Named Tonight

Twenty nine contestants vie for the Miss Clarke County title as Clarke County Fair opens at the Raritan Horse Show Grounds on Rt 7. The winner will reign over the 1972 fair and enter Miss State Fair contest and later Miss Raritan. Exhibits arrive for judging tomorrow and a car nival operates on the grounds with rides and features.

South Vietnamese Troops Drive to Halt North in Que Son Valley

Three thousand South Vietnamese troops opened a drive to block a North Vietnamese division from exiting Que Son Valley toward Da Nang. U S Air Force said 130mm guns and tanks were within striking range, with jets destroying three guns and two tanks near Da Nang. The confrontation follows a major NVA push that threatened Da Nang and Highway 1, as B52 bombers targeted valley concentrations and refugees fled toward the coast.

Troop Pullout Is Ahead of Schedule

The U S Command reports U S troop strength in Vietnam fallen to 39 200 as of last Thursday and likely below 39 000 in three days ahead of Nixon timetable by 11 days The pullout aims for 39 000 by Sept 1 with further cuts expected Aug 28 potentially 15 000 more leaving under 25 000 in Vietnam from a peak of 543 000 in April 1969 About 100 000 more serve from bases in Thailand and Guam and on 7th Fleet ships off Vietnam

Winchester Voter Registration Hours Announced

Cher Martha Grim registrar for Winchester will hold office hours in Room 203 at Rouss City Hall on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays 2 30 p m to 5 30 p m until October 7 to register new voters. After October 7 registration closes for the November 7 election with special hours 9 a m to noon and 2 p m to 6 p m on election day.
