The House passed a five year missile freeze with 329 votes for and seven against as Congress adjourned for the Republican National Convention amid fears the accord could let the Soviet Union gain nuclear superiority.
Kenneth K. Kyre has resigned as Dean of Shenandoah College to take a state educational post in South Carolina. He joined Shenandoah in 1956 and became Dean in 1963, with prior roles including Director of Admissions and Acting Dean. He will lead curriculum services with South Carolina State Board of Technical and Comprehensive Education overseeing 17 two year institutions.
House Republican Leader Gerald Ford said the chance of a peace announcement in Vietnam at the Republican National Convention is speculative. He cautioned he has no inside information about Nixon’s acceptance speech next Wednesday. Ford noted Kissinger’s Vietnam trip and discussed party gains and antibusing bill timing.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces closed two major routes into Saigon from the east and south and cut a third north of the capital. South Vietnamese reinforcements moved to reopen highways while a Quan Loi thrust aimed to retake the old U S base. U S B52 bombers supported operations as air strikes hit Hue and Haiphong area targets.
Warren County Sheriff Gary Keyser reports 200 to 300 youths searched the northern county area last night for a music festival that promoters claimed to plan this weekend. He says publicity discouraged organizers and notes the event would violate a 1971 county ordinance requiring a 21 day permit with promoter names, performers, and facilities details. Violations carry up to 300 dollars in fines or 30 days in jail per offense. He mentions a rumor of a large party along the Shenandoah River in Clarke County.

Dorothy Ann Rowe was found not guilty by a jury after about ninety minutes of deliberation in the killing of her husband Lester Ottobine Rowe. Medical examiner Dr. James Boyer ruled the death an almost instantaneous gunshot wound to the heart with kidney and lung involvement. Rowe testified and described a violent evening, with her husband assaulting her and ordering her to leave.
