A large armed gang with machine guns robbed an armored truck in Brooklyn, taking about 427000 dollars. Authorities hunted for the assailants as investigators reviewed security footage and collected evidence at the scene.
Arthur Misunas testifies that Walter Legenza fired the shot that killed E. M. Huband, the Federal Reserve Bank truck driver, during a twilight hold up in Richmond. Misunas also says the gang fled to Washington and later changed coats to hide the machine gun. Commonwealth's Attorney Haddon seeks the death penalty, arguing Legenza acted as ring leader or aided the crime.
Dr. Dutton and family return from Middlesex county visiting relatives and resume medical practice at their South Washington street home. Ben Dutton accompanies them.

About 1000 people are expected at the Shenandoah County Fairground in Woodstock on Thursday September 6 for the Shenandoah Cooperative Farm Bureau annual meeting and a basket picnic. Morning events include baseball and other sports with officer elections at 1 pm followed by free ice cream. G F Holsinger president of the state organization will speak and other speakers are invited. The Shenandoah Cooperative is led by Nehemiah Kelly J F Walker C A Bowman and J J Pickerell. The event will occur rain or shine with indoor facilities. The Warren Rappahannock Cooperative Farm Bureau meeting will follow September 8 at Front Royal courthouse starting at 1 pm S. B. Downing is president. Officers and directors will be elected.
Baltimore on August 21 Louis B Nelson of Baltimore killed himself by diving from a tower pipeline into Druid Lake reservoir. His brother in law Tom Gross identified him as police recovered the body. A verdict of death by own action was returned. A letter in his coat initially suggested New York but the smudged addressee turned out to be his wife near York Avenue.
J H Meek of the Division of Markets announces a series of apple industry meetings on August 23 24 at Roanoke Winchester Lovingston Charlottesville Staunton and Washington. The sessions cover Virginia standards for packing and discuss salary restoration and sampling for spray residue.
A New York State cold wave lowered temperatures to 36 degrees at 6 am in Rome, marking the low. In Baltimore the morning low reached 62 degrees, prompting overcoats downtown for the coolest day since June 9, but no records were broken.
Stromboli Island Italy August 21 The volcano known as the lighthouse of the Mediterranean erupts with two crashing explosions sending lava flows down the mountain slopes.
Niagara Falls Ontario August 21 two race horses Clarry of the N C Fletcher stable of Toronto and American B were destroyed by fire that burned a stable at the Stamford race track near here at noon today. Handlers led 38 other horses to safety. No cause given and no damage estimate yet. The track is owned by the Belleville Driving and Athletic Association.
Pittsburgh driver Thomas Creen says he is through with rich butterflies and his four day marriage to Colletta Mulvihill. He reveals elopment to Wellsburg was a midsummer dream and he never loved the bride. Colletta travels from Grove City toward a holiday.
The Evening Star obtained a suicide note from Jacob Coffman dated August 17 stating he was sober and wishing good luck to his family. Coffman’s body was found about 11:30 by Clifton Emory at the Airport Filling Station near Millwood and Front Royal pikes after he shot himself with a .22 caliber Stevens rifle.
President Roosevelt designated J. J. Thomas to be vice governor of the Federal Reserve Board and reappointed Adolph C. Miller for a 12 year term. Thomas heads the board during the governors vacancy after Eugene Black’s resignation. Miller accepts reappointment and remains in the Fifth District with Atlanta as capital.
