A carnage in Calcutta ends with military and police restoring order after four days of Hindu Muslim clashes. Official toll ranges from 2000 to 3000 with refugees flooding stations and food distribution crippled. US personnel say not involved while missions continue in the city.
Poland urged rejection of Italy’s claim that it was not at war with 21 Allied nations, arguing Poland and others faced Italian bullets. A tornado swept 11 miles south of Lancaster devastating a rich farm district. The funnel cut a mile long path and 300 yards wide unroofing homes, uprooting crops, and lifting a barn before dropping it. No casualties reported as Raymond Roy of Lime Valley described the storm as filled with flying trees and crops.
