President Truman says Japan will not have a chance for revenge and that atomic bomb science will aid mankind if Congress agrees. Hirohito tells MacArthur it will take days to enforce a cease fire and designates imperial family members to fronts while Naruhiko Higashi-Kuni to form Japan’s new government.
President Truman proclaimed Sunday August 19 as a day of prayer to God to support and guide the nation into paths of peace. He urged all faiths to offer thanks for victory and to dedicate the day to memory of those who died for it.

Larry E. Hill introduces a resolution to rename the Robert Y. Conrad Post No 21 to the Conrad Hoover Post in Winchester Virginia. The measure honors Pvt Charles Loring Hoover the first local World War II death, joining WWI names to memorialize all fallen service members.
