Mrs. J C Mackey of Kansas City rejoiced as she learned her husband, a 31 year old pilot, survived after being listed among those killed in a Briton trans Atlantic plane crash. Authorities had confused him with a Canadian radio officer G W Mackay who died in England.
The Winchester Frederick Red Cross chapter reports its First Aid class has reached 51 members, with six new registrations since the initial list of 45. New members include Mrs. Henry Bowers Mrs. D A Sughe Ralph P Yount Victor Carbaugh Thomas W Anderson and S O Price. The class meets on Monday Wednesday and Friday under instructors including Taylor Barr.
In Brevard North Carolina on August 16 moonshine makers explain that high wages in defense plants and rising raw material costs have driven moonshiners to quit. Ed Patton of Charlotte notes mountain distilling is drying up as sugar and grain prices rise and revenue agents intensify raids. A veteran recalls bootlegging during the 1918 era but concedes it now fails to be profitable.

In Roxboro North Carolina Aug 15 a mob of about 500 men gathered at the Person County jail to seize Cy Winstead 22 a Negro charged with assaulting a young white girl. Police and the state highway patrol used tear gas to keep the crowd back and Winstead was moved to the state prison in Raleigh without harm. The mob dispersed after six hours the sheriff reported the jail damaged and the night described as the worst in the county's history.
Seventeen gallons of gasoline in three five gallon tins and one two gallon can exploded at a Stephens City inn fire. A young man opened the rear compartment and struck a match causing the blaze. A youth was burned and others escaped with minor injuries as the party moved on to Kentucky.
Buffalo Aug 16 The CIO United Automobile Aircraft and Agricultural Implement Workers closed its two week sixth national convention with a resolution opposing United States entry into foreign wars and supporting aid to those fighting Hitler and his allies.
Domei reports from Yokohama that the Tatuta Maru arrived off Tokyo with three passengers dead and 120 others ill from food poisoning. All affected were Japanese and mostly steerage passengers.
Six men identified by Sheriff William Souter as CIO pickets at the struck United States Gypsum plant in Gypsum were charged today with carrying concealed weapons.
RAF bombers escorted by fighters attacked railway communications across the channel in German-occupied France today after a scouting sweep by RAF fighter squadrons.
The State Department said Japan will not grant clearance for the American steamship President Coolidge to remove more than 100 private citizens in Japan. About 20 Americans are among those seeking evacuation. Japan would allow port entry only to take off American officials. The issue was discussed with the Tokyo embassy and Japanese Foreign Office as U S officials seek transportation for citizens wishing to return home.

He hopes not to be inducted and notes he is married. A nearby lightning strike hit Carl Golliday’s barn near St. David’s Church Shenandoah county killing a cow and stunning him.
Washington August 16 military authorities said the purpose behind Secretary Stimson broadcast was to impress troops with dangers facing the United States and to foster morale for defense preparations. He warned soldiers they may fight on varied terrains and acknowledged sacrifices from the 18 month service extension while asserting the nation would field the most effective fighting force in peacetime. He warned of potential German or Japanese attacks and cited Dakar as a dangerous avenue if Nazis align with Vichy France.
In Elkins Virginia, Mrs Bess Johnson Perry known to radio as Johnson, wed Petersburg J former United States swimming star, in an announced June ceremony in Wrenton. Pick's parents say the Elkins native lives in New York City and works as a radio actress. Fick, retired from swimming, wed in Philadelphia prior to this marriage and is now visiting Elkins.
The Guernsey cow owned by Mr and Mrs R G Webster of Point West Virginia recently gave birth to twin calves. All are healthy and the farm has welcomed many visitors inspecting the newborns and the mother.
The annual convention opens tomorrow and runs through August 30 with delegates from Conrad Post No. 21 including Commander Harry McCann, Claude Grim, Goss, and Henry Lewis representing the legion.
