In Richmond a Virginia state hearing heard objections to Norfolk & Western plans to discontinue passenger trains 27 and 28 on the Shenandoah to Hagerstown Valley branch. Objectors from Page Warren and Clarke counties warned closure would burden drought affected communities, delay court trips and disrupt parcel post and mail. Railroad officials countered losses are tremendous and elimination would not significantly harm the public. The case was submitted after testimony ended.

British airship R-100 moored safely after transatlantic voyage
The R-100 completed its voyage to Canada and back in about 57 hours stormy seas tested its mettle but the dirigible rode out winds at up to 92 mph. A passenger, Edward Lill, died while the ship was moored, dampening the return.
