Winchester postmaster W Nelson Page will retire Sept 31 after nearly 15 years in office. Charles Barnett Spanish American War Veteran Dies
Charles Barnett longtime local resident and Spanish American War veteran died at 6 a.m. today at 586 North Kent Street after a brief illness. He served in the 2nd division of the 5th Army Corps at El Caney Hill of San Juan and Santiago and was principal musician in the Regimental Band of the 25th Infantry. He sounded taps for his comrades here until ill health stopped him. He spent his life in town except for Army service and was active in community welfare with many friends.

Birth and career of Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire
Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire born October 11 1635 in Winchester in the McGuire family home later linked to his nephew. He served as director to Gen Jackson after marching to Harper's Ferry in 1861 and later amputated Jacksons arm and closed his eyes in death. He died September 19 1900 and is honored by a bronze statue in Capital Square. His greatest pride was his son’s friendship and his lifelong advocacy for fair treatment of Southern school histories.
