Moscow dispatches report the German 39th Tank Corps and 11 divisions routed on the western front with more than 50 percent losses among 21 divisions. Pravda notes German offensive being smashed, while Soviet forces claim stabilizing, with battles near Ka Kisalmi Staraya Russia Smolensk and Bel Tserkov.
Berryville hosts the 40th Berryville Horse Show under clear skies with three Northern Virginia stables leading after day one. Peach Bros of Upperville, Greenhalghs of Berryville, and Mrs M EB Whitney of Upperville each had three first places, while Dr L M Allen of Winchester earned one first and two seconds. About 1500 spectators attended as races draw near the final day’s 9 o clock classes.
Machinists at Curtiss-Wright propeller plant Caldwell New Jersey vote unanimously to end their strike. They accept mediation board recommendations after delegates advised returning to work now. The walkout began as an unauthorized welders’ action and followed an NLRA election won by Propeller Craft union.
Winchester notes a 31 page June 30 1941 American Legion civilian defense pamphlet third in a series. It explains warden duties and qualifications and argues for a long range air raid defense program near strategic centers.
Berlin reports Odessa on the Black Sea has been encircled by Romanian forces with German Italian and Hungarian troops in southern Ukraine. Nikolaev near Odessa is also ringed as German and Hungarian units hold the city in a vise while Red Army forces near the Bug River face annihilation. The communique notes Italian participation in combat. Continued on Page 9. Col. 1.
In Staunton Virginia the Friendship Fire Company failed to win after a nozzle issue caused disqualification in the annual reel race. Luray claimed the $100 prize and custody of the state trumpet, with open-entry results noting Winchester and other teams placing in shorter dash events.
The Junior Board of Trade unfurls a safety banner at Handley Library marking a new 301 day stretch without a fatal traffic mishap in Winchester. George Jones chairs the JET safety committee and aims to maintain the record.
In Taneytown Maryland a public wedding under the Carroll County Pair drew about 5000 spectators. Miss Henrietta Mummert and Neville Wildasin of near Hanover Pennsylvania wed in a fair tradition. Miss Mabel Mummert served as maid of honor with Earl Baker as best man. A reception followed the ceremony.
The War Department ordered a sweeping revision of selective service induction to allow pre induction physicals near the candidate’s home. A test in Pennsylvania showed high command approval and extension to all states. Local boards in large cities will assess men far ahead of induction to reduce late disqualifications.
Baron Kiichiro Hiranuma, 75, Japan's vice premier, was gravely wounded at his Tokyo home when an autograph seeker-turned-assailant fired three shots from a hidden pistol. The attacker, Naohiko Nishiyama, 33, was captured at the gate. Hiranuma pursued him and held the suspect with the gatekeeper's help. Prince Konoye and Home Minister Tanabe visited the injured statesman as observers warned of cabinet fragility amid tense relations.

Petroleum Coordinator Ickes announced the first aviation gasoline shipment to Russia aboard an American tanker departing Los Angeles for Vladivostok. He said more tankers would follow and warned of possible stricter measures to curb Atlantic coast consumption amid a forecast shortage.
The 142nd session of the Virginia conference of the United Brethren church meets in Winchester September 23 to 25 with committee meetings on Sept 22 and evening opening services. Sunday marks the 19th anniversary of the North Braddock Street church. The 1941 42 bucket fund includes 394 for ministerial pension and 500 for Shenandoah College in Dayton. All friends and former members are invited.

The Senate voted 37 to 19 to approve an Army service extension bill sending it to President Roosevelt. Enlisted personnel could be kept for 18 more months, total service up to two and a half years for selectees and reservists, and up to four and a half years for regular enlistees. A $10 monthly pay raise would apply after 12 months served.
Richmond reports Colgate W. Darden Jr. secured the Democratic nomination with 105 655 votes. Vivian Page 19 526 and Hudson Cary 12 793 trailed as Darden carried most counties. Lt Gov winner William M Tuck led Plunkett 108 655 to 24 863 with 81 3 percent in the lieutenant governor race.
Roosevelt and Churchill announce a joint eight point plan aiming for the destruction of Nazi tyranny. They discuss munition supplies for resisting aggression and consider dangers to world civilization from German conquest. Lord Beaverbrook to visit Washington to discuss supply details.
London reports British sources say the Roosevelt Churchill talks pledged U S aid for postwar Europe and support of the Russian British cause on all fronts. The omission of Japan in the communique implies focus on Japan as a key discussion point. The meeting, invited by Roosevelt, lasted two to three days with top officials and military experts present.

A brief classified notice from Butler Packing House advertises wanted fruit stock including apples and Elberta peaches. It lists Willis Real Estate as the contact or broker and references packing house details with dates in August.

Funeral services for Major John Baldwin Neill Jr. 44 son of Mrs John B Neill of Berryville will be at 9 30 tomorrow morning at Fort Myer Chapel with military honors. Burial Arlington Cemetery follows. He served as a captain in the 13th during World War I and received a Victory Medal for service in France. He was assigned to the American Navy mission in Peking and served as a Naval observer in Nicaragua.
