Fred W. Forney is named president of a Virginia organization for the coming year. The appointment signals continued leadership and planned activities within the group.
Virginia State Firemen elect Fred W. Forney as president after long service. Winchester praised as first to fill the post from the city. Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen pick J. L. Redman as president and name other officers. Virginia Women’s Auxiliary also elects leaders. Alexandria chosen as 1932 convention city.
The three day convention of the Virginia State and Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association includes a block dance tonight, a grand parade tomorrow with route detailed, band contests at the Fair Grounds, and a list of visiting companies and Winchester groups with guest fires from multiple towns and states.
Presiding officers of two firemen's associations spoke at the Kiwanis Club weekly luncheon in Winchester. C. E. Woodward of Lexington and C. M. Webb of Shippensburg led praise for Winchester's hospitality, joined by R. A. Foster of Norfolk. An inter-club meeting was announced for Braddock Heights August 20.
Thousands of locals and hundreds of visiting firemen from Virginia Maryland Pennsylvania West Virginia watched Winchester's four-engine parade led by the Winchester Concert Band. The display showcased white uniforms colored flares and motorized equipment highlighting the city's strong volunteer fire department and its place among regional departments.
An enormous Cameron street crowd watched the Virginia State Firemen’s Association reel races. Luray won in 3042 seconds, Harrisonburg No 4 was second, Edinburg had no time due to a blown nozzle, Staunton finished in 28% seconds, with races covering 150 yards and 150 feet of hose, prizes of 200 100 and 50 dollars and the trophy to the winner.
Middletown resident C. L. Fletcher known as Doc Fletcher a prominent restauranteur was found dead in bed this morning by his wife. Death reportedly due to heart trouble though no prior signs noted. He leaves a widow a daughter of a late Middletown postmaster a sister and a brother both in Strasburg Virginia. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
Paris Aug 13 Premier Laval accepted Chancellor Bruening's invitation for a Franco German conference in Berlin. The return meeting was slated for August 28. Ambassador Von Hoesch delivered the invitation to the minister of the interior from Laval Briand and Foreign Minister Briand.
A new advertising trend lights Berlin with a searchlight of 1 500 000 candles, creating a striking nighttime display. The powerful beam draws attention to commercial messages across the city streets and storefronts.
The thirtieth Berryville Horse and Colt Show opened in Clarke county with ideal weather drawing exhibitors and prominent figures from Washington, New York and Virginia. Four score entries across 32 classes and 12 races filled two days of competition as heavy draft and hunter divisions showcased top horses from Purcellville Berryville Middleburg and surrounding counties.
Plans set for tomorrow at 2 PM the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association parade in Winchester led by the Winchester Fire Department and the Winchester Concert Band. Seventy five units including 47 fire companies from several states will form in two divisions with bands, drum corps, and trucks. The route runs from Cameron Street to Baker and Loudoun to Monmouth and Braddock, then to the Winchester Fair Grounds arena.

Chicago August 13. Market reports show sagging commodity prices may let farmers save by burning corn for fuel and feeding peaches to hogs. Corn fell near three cents to 48 cents a bushel with peaches in southern Illinois 35 to 50 cents. Transport costs leave about 22 cents per bushel for corn, making coal cheaper by 2 to 4 dollars a ton. Seven bushels of peaches cost about 2.45 versus nearly 3.50 for seven bushels of corn producing about 100 pounds of pork. The southern Illinois peach crop is three times larger than average, with later crops likely higher in price. Wheat futures were strong on a smaller spring crop outlook, while July corn saw volatility with a 72% cent spike.

At a meeting the Winchester Fire Department decided to participate as an escort of honor in Friday’s parade. All members will march in uniform as a single fire department unit, not competing for prizes. Report at Friendship Hall one hour before the parade.

Winchester Memorial Hospital announces plan to place 70 000 first mortgage bonds on hospital buildings and contents. Bonds valued at 500 and 1000 dollars each dated September 1 1931 for five years. Plant and contents appraised over 300 000 dollars. Treasurer Miss Lillian Anderson invites interested parties to subscribe.
