Reports from the White House say the president canceled a proposed Western trip for a high school event due to a severe drought. Preparations were underway for a Thursday conference between governors and federal leaders.
Maryland farmers and agricultural agents gathered at the University of Maryland to map drought relief measures as fires and heat devastated areas. The storm and drought had already damaged hundreds of homes and disrupted traffic while Virginia and Utah reports noted widespread water shortages and floods.
A fire at 1:30 p.m. damaged the northeast main annex of the former Kent Street Presbyterian Church on North Kent Street. The Guthridge garage and several autos were burned or damaged while residents escaped. Fire Chief C. Lee Barr was injured by a broken window while entering the building. The property loss is estimated at over $1,500 for the garage and $1,000 for the adjacent building, insured. Word has been received of the death of George W. Walters in a Greensboro North Carolina hospital after injuries from being crushed between freight cars. He worked 30 years for the Southern Railroad as a freight conductor and was a brother of Rev. Dr. W. T. Walters formerly pastor of First Christian Church here and now in Everett Pennsylvania.
The Big Gore Picnic and Yard Party will be held Saturday August 23. Proceeds from the event go entirely to aid families made homeless by the Gore fire. Modern Woodmen Committee sponsors this charitable effort.

Colonel J W Downer of the Sixth Field Artillery and Captain B R Woodruff visited Winchester to arrange Battery A for the sixty first annual fair opening August 26. The unit will bring four guns five tractors trucks and motorcycles and set up a model camp living in tents with daily afternoon visits and evening maneuvers at the grand stand. Downer a Berryville native has ties to the area and will also appear at the Clarke County Horse and Colt Show next week entering a jumping horse.
Andrew Bell announced the Good Will Air Tour will arrive tomorrow with guests of the local Chamber of Commerce in Winchester. The party will tour the city and attend a luncheon at the George Washington Hotel. Officials will meet them at the flying field on the Lee Jackson Highway.
The wreckage of an airplane rested on Ladner field in Vancouver British Columbia as owners mourn the failure of a planned four stop flight from Tacoma to Tokyo. Bob Wark was seriously injured with possible internal injuries after the Pacific Area crashed during landing and he was reported in high fever at the hospital.
ST HUBERTS AIRPORT Montreal Aug 12 The British dirigible R-100 will cast off at nine oclock tomorrow night EST on its return to Cardington England after a flight over Canadian cities. It rests at its mooring mast and is expected to rise over the maritime provinces and complete the voyage with favorable winds. The R-100, the worlds biggest airship, set records for east to west crossing and rapid mooring on arrival in Canada.
A certified public accountant reported to the Winchester City Council that the city has assets totaling about 2.39 million dollars versus liabilities of roughly 793 thousand. The audit lists fixed assets including schools water and sewer systems and city buildings, and notes bonds outstanding totaling 793 thousand. The report also describes a new bookkeeping system and a weekly payroll change for city employees.
Labor Day plans are shaping for the Eighth Annual Picnic of the Friendship Fire Company to be held at Fisher's Hill. The event on Labor Day, the first of September, features swimming dancing a baseball game and other attractions with local fire companies and nearby towns invited to join the outing. Hundreds from smaller communities are expected to attend making it a red letter day for Winchester.
