Federal mediators fail to avert nationwide railroad strike
In New York on August 12, federal mediators led by Judge Knapp told railroad workers no settlement by mediation was possible and proposed arbitration. The Brotherhood demanded an eight hour day and time and a half overtime, while saying there was nothing to arbitrate. President Wilson was briefed as talks continued amid a looming strike.

Washington Aug 12 The War Department announced all militiamen in mobilization camps totaling about 35 000 would be sent to the Mexican border immediately.
