Mayor Kendrick welcomes Virginia Folk officials and Shenandoah Valley delegation as a radio program features the Boys' Band and a trip reference to Byrd’s flight to the Pole. A Philadelphia message notes a photo of three delegation members and an official who jokes about returning to the train.

The United Brethren Church in Winchester marks the fourth anniversary of its dedication this Sunday August 22 with Rev. J. H. Brunk D D VirginIa conference superintendent preaching morning and evening. The church is praised as an asset to the city and invited for the anniversary service with expected strong sermons singing and special music.
The seven seven annual convention of the Disciples of Christ of the Valley District opens in the local Church of Christ with sessions led by Rev. H M Mayhew and Rev. J D Hamaker. Addresses by Rev. G H Bailey Rev. H J Dudley and Rev. Arthur Wake highlight the ministerial gathering.
About 25 to 30 Winchester boys will depart August 17 for a ten day Rotary Club camp on the Capon River in Hampshire County West Virginia. John J. Brown Jr. will direct the outing with John Eddy Abner Huntsberry and W W Glass Jr assisting. The program emphasizes wholesome recreation and practical camping skills with no rigid rules.
The Firemen's Welfare Association plans a weeklong carnival on a suitable lot to be announced. Miller Brothers Carnival will perform with five rides ten big shows 38 concessions and its own band for nightly concerts. Committees for grounds lights wheels tickets and music were named at a Welfare Association meeting.
A homeless dog, acting oddly, attracted attention near O T Ritter’s home on Valley Avenue. Police Guthridge and SPCA agent Purcell D Plank found it under a car in the Ritter garage. It was driven to the city dump and killed with a revolver shot.
The AP reports a week of good to excellent crop progress in Virginia with pastures improving and priming tobacco beginning in the far south. Apple growing remains favorable amid overall favorable weather and growing conditions.
Rescue workers labored in extreme heat and muck at a 160 foot shaft in Salem Kentucky to reach five men entombed after a cave in last Thursday. Water was hauled from the surface as efforts continued to clear mud and create a passage while optimism rose over air flow reaching the abandoned tunnel.
Handley High School Band of Winchester attended the Philadelphia Rotary Club luncheon today during a Canada New England and east tour with Shenandoah Valley trade expansionists and goodwill greeters. They heard the Boys Symphony Orchestra and the Rotary boys opera organization from New Jersey. Cecil Lean and Cleo Mayfield welcomed band members at the opening of their new musical show. Winchester was frequently praised on stage by the stars.
One of the hottest days of the summer with humidity and sun driving temperatures high. By two o clock the standard thermometer at Eve Bros Department Store on Piccadilly Street stood at 99 degrees amid a stifling afternoon.
In Peoria Illinois John Cooper a Kewanee iron worker claims a $9 million inheritance and plots large church and hospital gifts. Cooper pledges $250000 for a church and promises $5.2 million cash plus 16900 acres of land from his grandmother to support a nurses home at a Catholic Hospital.
Freder ick county school grounds have seen Sunday baseball games this summer. The County School Board, meeting Monday, passed a resolution prohibiting permission to play baseball on county school property on Sundays.
A tornado mile east of Padroni County wrecked multiple homes and damaged crops last night. Four people were injured including a man who carried his family to safety, and a four year old child, Alvin Zylon, was killed when his house was demolished. Heavy hail and rain followed, with several dwellings overturned and farm equipment damaged.
The John Robinson Circus wrapped its 103rd Winchester visit as tents folded in the early morning and crowds praised a clean and classy program. Performances featured Nellie Roth with seven tigers and Lone Carl guiding nine lions, with elephants, aerial acts, and a historic, wholesome show praised for fair pricing and no gambling.
The Empire Theatre presents a Virginia Cavaliers eleven piece University of Virginia orchestra performing tonight at 45 dollars. The feature film Brown of Harvard stars Jack Pickford Mary Brian Mary Alden Francis X Bushman Jr and William Haines with stirring Yale Harvard football and crew race scenes. Comedy and Newsreels close the program between the two evening shows.
Nearly the entire Winchester fire department will travel to Martinsburg for the Cumberland Valley Firemen's Association parade. Friendsship, Rouss, and Sarah Zane will join with their bands and drum corps totaling 14 pieces. They depart by auto around 10 AM and parade at 2 PM, returning tomorrow night.
The Luttrell reunion is scheduled for Collinsville this county on Saturday August 14. Several ministers will entertain attendees on the grounds and all are invited to join for a good time hosted by the committee.
The Northern Virginia Power Company moves electric light and telephone lines from Loudoun Street between Boscawen and Piccadilly streets. Wires are being re placed along rear alleys serving east side businesses, with west side patrons served from Indian alley. The county courthouse area will be wired from Boscawen Street. The work is voluntary with both companies removing overhead lines to reduce unsightliness as growth projections anticipate ten years of expansion.
In a county Magistrate's court a group of young men were fined for drunken driving in a county truck. All paid $69.25 except Frank Shirey the piano tuner who remains jailed awaiting payment or a three month sentence. He faces a state road work report and medical fitness evaluation. Lucius Hodge’s case was altered to 30 days in jail and $100 fine plus costs totaling $119.25.
W. S. Laughlin and H. J. Laughlin, father and son, visited the circus yesterday. They were escorted from the after noon performance for intoxication and held at police headquarters. The elder Laughlin admitted drinking dandelion wine. both were unable to post $12 bail and kept in custody. They were fined $12 each including costs for public drunkenness.
All arrangements are set for a monster boxing program at Baseball Park in Martinsburg tomorrow night. The main event features New York welterweight Jack Horner facing Spike Webb of Charlotte, N Y in a 10 round bout. Spider Britt of Washington meets Battling Hurley of Baltimore in a separate six round match. Terry O Day, a Kenilworth winner in Washington, boxes Sammy Hogan in another six rounds. A four round preliminary starts the show tomorrow.

Flames still roared as seven large tanks burned at the American Oil and Refining Company in South Baltimore. Four explosions injured eight firefighters, forced hundreds to flee, and damaged equipment and nearby utilities. Officials put losses around 250000, with a large crowd watching from blocks away.
Louis Blaustein, former Winchester resident and head of American Oil and Refining Company, rose from local kerosene and gasoline dealer to a Baltimore based magnate. His son Louis Blaustein Jr. manages Baltimore interests while Capt. George H. Grimm runs the Winchester branch near North Kent Street by the B&O tracks.
A small town near Stuttgart in Württemberg awaits the arrival of Gertrude Ederle the American swimmer. Officials singing societies and local residents plan a grand reception for the 77 year old Mrs George Ederle who still runs Lamb's farm.
