President Eisenhower called atomic science the newest and most promising tool to clean up disorders and wars as the International Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy opened in Geneva. Homi J. Bhabha predicted harnessing hydrogen bomb energy for peaceful use within 20 years, promising abundant fuel.
In a proclamation cited by Strauss of the U S Atomic Energy Commission, the President reaffirms the Dec 8 1953 pledge to apply atomic science for human well being not death. He calls for global cooperation among governments and business to incentivize new peaceful uses of the atom.
Richard L Crisman 41 of Winchester was found guilty of bookmaking on horse races held at Charles Town and elsewhere. He was fined 500 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in jail, with 60 days suspended and probation for one year. The judge upheld the Virginia code section 18 282 defining penalties for betting on races outside the state.
Col John Knox Arnold Jr told reporters in Tokyo that Chinese Reds subjected 10 of 11 U S airmen to months of physical and mental torture to extract statements used in alleged spying trials. The men, released at the Hong Kong border, head home via two routes with 30-day convalescent leaves.
Two barns struck by lightning almost simultaneously on Saturday afternoon were destroyed by fire, part of four weekend fires in Frederick and Clarke counties. The Clarke County barn on Holmes Carpet farm held three tons of hay and old equipment. The Frederick County fire on the Dan Patch farm involved about 3,500 bales of hay and a few chickens, with tractors and machinery in a separate building. Fire departments from Shawnee, Stephens City, Berryville, and John Enders responded. insured status varied and some other outbuildings were saved.
In a hot Kentucky primary Louisvilles A B Hap Chandler leads with 152 937 votes to Bert T Combs 135 907 and Jesse N R Cecil 3 239 as returns from 2 028 of 4 074 precincts flow in. Combs campaign chairman Rumsey Taylor cautions that only about half the votes are counted.
Pravda reports a Soviet airliner crash near Voronezh claimed 25 lives including 10 Norwegian women. The tragedy occurred Saturday on the Stalingrad to Moscow route. Bodies may be unidentifiable and cremation planned. Russia to pay indemnities.

After a 2 12 hour session and a 48 hour recess, diplomats A Alexis John and Wang Ping nan pressed for a list of Chinese nationals in the United States and for the fate of roughly 4 000 students who came after World War II.
In Chicago on the eve of the governors conference Gov. Abraham Ribicoff urged Adlai Stevenson to declare whether he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination next year. Ribicoff warned Stevenson he won’t be drafted again and urged a public decision. He backed Sen. Paul Douglas of Illinois in 1952 and noted he has no candidate for 1956. Texas Democrat Gov. Allan Shivers said he would not support Stevenson next year as 27 Democratic governors were expected in Chicago.
Una Schmidt Fine moved with her two year old son Danny to California to decide whether to remain with returning prisoner of war Schmidt or with her husband Alford B. Fine a logging driver. Schmidt and 10 others were shot down in a B29 January 12 1953. he was in a Chinese prison for 32 months and had not yet seen his son. Berline r said Una and Fine live apart temporarily until they resolve their problems and that Schmidt would discuss the matter in person upon return.
The Capital Outlay Study Commission proposes a six year plan to fund Virginia capital needs. It calls for $109,090,720 in expenditures with $101,307,285 from the general fund and the rest from revenue bonds and federal aid. The package prioritizes school and college facilities and speeding up tax receipts to fund the first biennium.
After an eight day heat wave with highs over 90, the Winchester area saw rain with highs around 80 and lingering humidity. Clarke County reports about an inch or more, aiding pastures and alfalfa while Frederick County notes lighter rainfall and benefit to late corn and pastures. showers may continue with cooler, humid air and scattered rain.
Cool air and thundershowers broke the summer’s longest heat wave over the weekend, reaching the Deep South today. A father rescued his 11 year old niece near Capon Bridge West Virginia but died along with his 16 year old daughter Kathryn Elder in the Cacapon River. The accident occurred about 5 10 p m. The Elder family from Fairmont had gone to a cabin near Cold Stream for several days. Janet Rexroad aged 11 was saved by the father before both victims disappeared in deep water. The bodies were retrieved about an hour later and taken to Giffin Funeral Home Capon Bridge for return to Fairmont.
Fifteen U S soldiers and four Koreans were reported injured in renewed riots against Communist truce inspection teams. The U S Army denied Korean police reports that soldiers bayoneted five demonstrators. At Pusan guard duties by Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission teams saw rock throwing and mass demonstrations by about 30 000 laborers. Demonstrations also occurred at Inchon and Kunsan as Seoul awaited MSC withdrawal deadlines. The ROK government accuses Pole and Czech members of spying for North Korea and seeks Swedes and Swiss to leave.
