Humidity rises as temperatures climb with a long heat spell. Noon readings near 98 degrees while afternoon forecasts warned of possible 100 degree heat, with hot and humid conditions expected into the weekend and only scattered showers providing slight relief.
Cool air moved from western Lake Superior toward Lake Ontario while heat lingered across the Eastern and Southern states. Chicago enjoyed relief after 11 days above 90 but the hot trend persisted in Illinois and Indiana. Readings hit 100 in Boston and LaGuardia 94 in New York City 97 in Philadelphia with 100s in the Southwest desert region and scattered thundershowers across Kansas to the Great Lakes and Colorado to the Dakotas.
Long Island Rail Road trains continued to operate after a dawn threat of a wildcat strike by 1100 trainmen appeared to fade. Mediator T E Schoonover will visit New York to begin dispute hearings between the railroad and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen over run length pay and 250 long standing grievances.
Clarke County schools prepare for the 1955-56 year with Berryville Elementary appointing Robert J L Robertson and Boyce Elementary naming Robert T Kaylor as new principals. Existing principals C B Miley at Clarke County High and Leon D Harding at Johnson Williams will continue. Enrollment is projected above 1,700 with a full opening Sept 1 and routine bus and cafeteria operations resuming.
Senator Kefauver a liberal wing Democrat rejected ADA claims that Eisenhower and congressional leaders acted with public indifference. He praised foreign affairs while urging action on domestic issues, including school construction highways social security water resources and farm legislation in the next session.
Moorefield West Virginia hosts a re reenactment of McNeill’s Rangers raid on Cumberland where four descendants participated with one Confederate cap. The event closed the West Virginia Poultry Association convention and featured plenty of Davy Crockett hats despite scarce rebel caps.
Patrolman Michael Gianttassio shot and killed a robbery suspect, William Lloyd Walls, 35, in crowded Pennsylvania Station after a garage theft of $68. A second suspect, Russell Cohen, 25, was captured nearby in a restaurant as hundreds watched.
Wealthy automobile dealer's wife Wilma Allen, 34, is missing after a Thursday shopping trip. Blood stained clothes and a car found abandoned near Union Station prompt a broad search. Detectives discount reports of two men dragging a woman. investigators note unaccounted miles on the car and cautious remarks from her husband Maj. Eugene Pond leads the inquiry.
Hurricane Connie altered its path overnight bypassing the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to the north. Miami forecaster Gordon Dunn reported the storm moves west northwest toward the Bahamas and South Atlantic coast with winds 100 to 125 mph. The slight turn raises hopes it will avoid Cuba and the Florida Straits though advisories remain in effect for coastal areas. An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft surveyed the system.
In Korea ten U S soldiers of the 24th Division were killed and ten injured when an Army truck carrying them to Kimpo Air Base crashed through a bridge railing and overturned into a stream catching fire. One more soldier was reported critically injured. Names were withheld pending next of kin.
Kentucky observed heavy voting as Democrats choose a governor candidate in a heated primary. Former Gov. Happy Chandler competes with Judge Bert Combs and Jesse Cecil, while U S Senator Barkley backs his choice amid bitter rivalries and high turnout. Republican contenders include Edwin Denney and James Clay.
Navy Secretary Charles S. Thomas said he will give a full and impartial review to the case of Eugene Landy an honor student refused a naval reserve commission because his mother was once a Communist.
Boston health officials broadcast a national appeal for more nurses as polio cases in New England rise past 1,000. The six-state tally reached 1,001 with 26 new Massachusetts cases and 20 polio deaths statewide.
West Berlin police report a former East Zone major in the Communist police who fled to the West was abducted by Red agents with the help of his daughter. Sylvester Murau, 48, was lured from Heubach near Darmstadt and taken to East Berlin after a 10,000 West mark payment. Engineers Joachim Tietze and Heinz Horeis, both 24, were arrested. the daughter’s role and motives remain unclear.
The Virginia State Bar Association adopted a resolution decrying what it calls a pattern by the U S Supreme Court of invading reserved state powers, citing school desegregation rulings. Dean Ribble of UVa was elected president as J Sloan Kuykendall became executive committee chair.
In Winchester Kentucky two sisters Helen Louise Paul age five and Donna Marie seven drowned when their father Edward Paul steered his car into the Kentucky River mistaken for a ferry. Mrs Paul and the other parent Mr Hisle escaped with a baby girl Carol Ann. Sterling Townsend rescued the infant after it was swept from Mrs Paul’s arms as the river current pulled the vehicle 40 feet into the water. Local state police officer James McMullin said the father believed the ferry was on his side of the stream.
President Eisenhower arrived at the Gettysburg area farm in a new blue and white two engined Air Force plane costing just under seventy five thousand dollars. He planned to review hundreds of bills Congress passed to end its 1955 session and act on them before a Cabinet meeting in Washington. The trip marks the first use of this model by the President, with longer cabin and a rotating hassock chair. the Air Force intends to buy fifteen similar planes for short governmental hops.
Ten people were injured in two area crashes today, six from the Adkins family of Salisbury Maryland. The most serious crash occurred at Double Toll Gate Clarke County at 9:15 a.m. when a car collided with a tractor trailer. Francis Adkins 14 suffered a head injury and was listed serious. his father William 44 had shock and lacerations, and mother Mrs Adkins 40 had severe lacerations and rib injuries. Two other children were treated and released. The Adkins were en route from Maryland and were joined by Roger L Dade 62 of Jefferson Md who had forehead lacerations and possible chest injury. The truck driver William Black sustained a bruised hip and leg laceration. The Ford failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the southbound tractor trailer. A second crash on Old Charles Town road near Stephenson injured Lucille Singhass and Elsie Thorpe with facial and chest injuries respectively. Investigations could not provide full details.
Two local national guard units, Co. I and Headquarters Co., arrived at the local armory after a two week encampment at Indiantown Gap Pa. They were led by Capt. Boyd Headley Jr and Capt. Roland White and numbered about 200 men. Other units in the 3rd Battalion 116th Infantry proceeded to their headquarters in convoy from Charlottesville Staunton and Har.
