President Truman signed a law granting 2.43 billion dollars for enlisted men terminal leave pay and 30 million for veterans’ auto purchases. The measure also adds 26 million for OPA and 75 million previously authorized, with payments to former and current personnel dating to 1939.
William A. Wright of Tappahannock formally announced his candidacy for the unexpired U S Senate term. Howard W. Smith of Alexandria remains receptive to convention support, while Thomas G. Burch of Martinsville signals retirement with a view to a November election. Byrd wins 7 to 4 in close party primary returns.
Reginald Morrison was elected commander of Post No. 41, American Legion in Berryville for 1946-47. Officers chosen include Tousley Hooker as first vice commander and Edward McDonald as second vice commander, with Arthur Edmonds adjutant and Maurice Wisecarver Jr. finance officer. Delegates to the state convention were named, with Morrison as post commander authorized to appoint alternates. A proposed veterans home-coming was discussed and a committee to study it named.
Shenandoah County canvass shows 2,135 votes cast with 1,878 for Senator Byrd and 257 for Martin A. Hutchinson. Byrd's county majority stands at 1,621.

Loring C. Kackley was reappointed Clarke county trial justice for a four year term from July 1, 1946 to June 30, 1950. Judge Burry Harrison made the appointment after Kackley qualified with oath and a $500 bond. He has served in Clarke County since 1934.
FBI reports capture of Samuel Burgess Denney 16 and Charles Carroll Bishop 17 in Charlottesville after fleeing Petersburg reform school Monday. Police chase ended with the pair found in possession of a stolen car from Richmond. vehicle wrecked.
Philadelphia August 8. Father Divine the self styled God and Negro evangelist announced a second marriage to Edna Rose Ritchings a 21 year old Montreal woman at a Washington DC wedding banquet. He said the union is in name only and that God is not married. Followers cheered as the ceremony and its description unfolded with chants and singing.
British high commissioner Sir Alan Gunningham said Arab leaders at a London roundtable refused an invitation on Palestine's future. Arabs opposed partition and pressed concerns over immigration limits and Arab prisoners. Cabinet discussions reportedly considered tight coast blockade and stricter handling of displaced camps and migratory routes into Italy.
County agent Ts Stine reports 50 of 100 Bahamans will reach Winchester late next week, with 100 more expected next month. Colored migratory workers travel in groups and will be ready Monday August 19. Employers urged to contact Stine by August 17 to arrange contracts and labor crews for upcoming apple harvest in southwest Virginia Kentucky and Tennessee.
The Senate War Investigating Committee announced it has the names of the individuals who allegedly looted secret files from its offices to copy materials on the Garsson munitions combine. FBI agents were set on the case as new expert help was promised to pursue war time fraud and anti profiteering loopholes amid missing documents tied to Erie Basin and Batavia Metal Products.
Local packer H. W. Butler says sugar shortage dulls the apple market with prices down about a dollar. He notes housewives lack sugar to prepare apples and that buyers are scarce as a result.
City Councilman J. Henkel Henry underwent a serious operation last Monday at Memorial Hospital. Attendants report he is slightly improved and progressing as well as could be expected, with at least another week in hospital. Many friends inquire daily about his condition.
Senator Byrd declares gratitude for vote of confidence from the valley and home community. He says he would have preferred defeat to lack of confidence and pledges earnest efforts for Valley priorities.
The Middletown council approved on third and final reading an ordinance for a water system bond election. Mayor Fred J. Larrick said the ordinance will be sent to Judge Burr P. Harrison for approval soon. The session was the year end finale with incumbents re elected for next month.
Stephens City council approved steps to augment the water supply by digging a new town well likely on the Fire Company lot. The move follows low water levels and restrictions on non essential use as two existing wells run short. Mayor F B Cadwallader was absent due to illness. W Lomax Parker will succeed him at the September meeting. Ear l Holman Layne dies at 41 in Newport News after goiter operation. Layne had been Peninsula superintendent of Colonial Stores.
John I Moore, a Scranton native, is appointed assistant executive of the Shenandoah Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He will begin his duties on September 1.
New York Aug 8 deep in debate the UN committee begins reviewing six bids for membership. Afghanistan leads the list as a buffer between India and the Soviet Union with two daily sessions planned until a Security Council decision. Transjordan follows after gaining independence from a British mandate and supporting Pan Arab opposition.
Kermit Batt reports the Airport Speedway will open soon after May 1 construction. The track hosts jalopies midgets big cars stock cars and motorcycles with a large enclosed grandstand a new judges stand and a public address system. The road to the track is hard surfaced.
William Davis, 43, is in Warrenton jail after a fatal shooting of Sgt. John Holcombe Woodson, 63, a Southern Railway detective. Commonwealth's Attorney Charles G. Stone said murder charges will be filed and a preliminary hearing set within days. Davis reportedly entered from South Boston and was captured after a rifle-brandishing visit to the Musselman home.
Reports from Paris indicate a heated debate on voting procedures and Molotov’s push to extend veto power. Molotov challenged the Foreign Ministers Council findings, while Evatt accused Western powers of collusion against Soviet interests as talks continue.
